A different spin on transmission problems

I have a disco 2, 71,000 miles with some transmission problems. They are as follows; both m & s lights flashing, serv engine light is on, and pulling a code of the highside switch control cannot swith off or has short circuit to +12V. Truck is in limp home mode.

Happened when I got stuck pretty deep and water came in on numerous occasions yesterday. Made it home, changed oil, diff fluids, transfer case fluid, transmission fluid, dropped the pan and cleaned, filter and gasket are also new as of this morning. I also removed the EAT ECU, cleaned it and the connector.

What would be the next step to diagnosing this problem. Could it be that the ecu is bad and I need a new one? After this is fixed I will have to tupperware the ecu much like Jeff and Dean.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. Dan

D2 m&s lights flashing

trailpimp...I have a D2 with 75000 miles that had the same flashing lights---usually when you see that light your ****** is stuck on 3 rd gear(limp mode)-

In my case I replaced the battery(a very common fix for this light)--, and it was fixed--
this light usually triggers code p0705(gear switch )--but don't even consider changing the switch until you get a new battery--Always start with the cheapest .....

I hope that helped.......

Thanks for the quick replies. I did clean the connections under the passenger seat and managed to get a lot of water out of them. Where would the short be coming from? Other connections are located where? Unfortunately I was supposed to get my rave cd back yesterday, but the person who borrowed it never made it so I am without one.

The code I am pulling is P1613. I would assume connections to the bcu also, but that is too high for it to have gotten wet.

There's a known issue on the D2 ZF (read about it in one of the latest LRMs) that when water gets up on the transmission around teh connections, it can prevent the ECU from determining which gear it's in....or something like that. Also, the A/C drain on the left side would drain right at this spot on the ZF. You might somehow try to dry out the AT as much as possible, see what happens.

Dan,

Any water in the trans fluid? If yes, it will take a several fluid changes to get it out because a lot of fluid remains in the torque converter.

When Dean had a similar problem, he had to flush his trans and it took a few days for everything to dy out before the trans started shifting normally again.

Hey Jaime! Yep still having problems. Got home by 10 or so....going 45-50 on the NJTP is no fun. Though there didn't seem to be any water in the fluid, I will try flushing the fluid a couple more times while at work. I will clean the ecu a little more too. I am just stumped by the short circuit code. Cleaning the ecu got rid of 4 error codes, but the one still remains.

How are the brakes?

Try and get the entire vehicle dry. If you have a garage, use a dehumidifier and set it to run 100%, oneof those big cheapo 20 inch box fans to move the air helps.

Well, the humidifier was left in the car running in the garage overnight. I also cleaned the ecu and the harness and still no luck. Comes back with a short in the high range.

Does this mean the ecu is bad?

Hey Dan,

Got home fine with the vise grips clamped on the line....now I just gotta decide whether I want to fork over $55 for a lousy brake line or drive around witth 3 wheel brakes (not a good idea) while I wait for some lines through the mail.

As far as your trans, did you check any electrical connections to the trans under the truck? Isn't there a speed sensor down below? Maybe that sucker is wet and sending incorrect signals which is preventing the trans from shifting.

I'm sure your ECU is OK. A little water does not hurt them. Just give them a chance to get dry.
