A hidden connection?

What electrical connection would cause this problem, IF this is the problem?
Condition = Running in water, say mid-door, nice bow-wake going-on in front and NO water over the hood. Also, this is a recent problem that has surfaced, meaning never an issue in the past.

Problem = sputtering, sometimes engine will die. Easily restarted and off we go.

Vehicle = 97 Disco. Snorkel and box is dry.

Misc = I have applied dielectric grease on almost every under-the-hood connection, but nowhere else? I typically re-apply the grease every year or two.

Is there a relay, a connection that is under the body somewhere that is killing the engine?

Thanks in advance.

i would head right for the Crank Sensor also, would cause sputtering fo sho, i have seen a 97 disco that the wires for the crank sensor were bare, as in the plastic casing melted off and if ya touched them together put, put, put, put, ...........etc etc crank sensor is under your feet bolted into the engine and picks up the flywheel signal.

Thanks Josh and David. I will crawl under and take a look & see. That would be awesome if this was the culprit.
Yea, this site rocks man!

OK, what is the trick to getting that damn shield off from the crankshaft position sensor?
This is the first time I said f#$k it, I can't get to it.
Man I was twisted this way and that. So little room.
What size are the bolt-heads that hold that shield.

Looking for some tricks here and anything would be appreacited.

Thanks in advance.

Appreciate the input on cracked lines.
However, can anyone tell me the trick to remove that stupid Crankshaft Position shield?
I was attempting to remove it from underneath, got to be a better way....

i went through the wheel well and a lil underneath :D If i remeber correctly i used a deep well 9/32 socket, i think a 7mm will work it has got to be a 1/4 inch drive cuz size does matter. the smaller the better,

Thanks David.
I was thinking that I might have to remove the tire to get better access.
9/32 deep well, I will try that since the stupid bolt-heads seem to be recessed a bit.

Do you think it is worth simply replacing the sensor, even if the wires are in good shape?
IF I were to replace that sensor, and checked for leaky vacum lines, where would you suspect the next culprit?

Thanks again in advance.

Bruce, i would try to re create the scenario b4 replacing it,( if ya got 120k or more yea just replace it) But, get your garden hose and get to work drowning that sensor, i mean alot of water, no high pressure just a good old open hose, Then put the spray bib back on and mist your plug wires, do it at night and any problems with stray sparks will show themselves, that would be my next step.

gordo here

Hey Bruce, I wish I could help you out man but Im not familar with the 97 electronics. However, it might be worth checking your fuel pump wires to be sure they arent shorting out too. I guess it could cause the problem too. Just a guess man. Gordo

With a 7 metric 12-pt, I finally got the Crankshaft Position Sensor off. Wires were bare. James at British 4x4 suggested I use liquid E-tape to reseal which I did. Wrapped them up nice and tidy and repalced the sensor. All and all. the hardest damn part I have ever had to remove. My forearms are red and tender, had to create a few cuss words, and really came close to dropping the y-pipes to get more room. Wow is all I can say.
Hope that does the trick and we will see soon.
Thanks to all that made suggestions.
