Well since you brought it up. RTE is a bad example of a $G rip off. THey changed it slightly to try to keep from looking like a direct knock off. Since its tough to hit something right on the nose as far as looks are concerned , and $G did it , the RTE is just ugly. They didnt even attempt to match thier own front in any way... Gets the job done I am sure , as thier front does. Just no creativity there as far as I am concerned.. To do the rear bumper in a fashion that it matches the truck and flow of the body would be a difficult task and its tough to make money off of them when they are labor intensive to build. Thats why you see alot of sharp edges. I have some ideas , I am just not satified yet with what I have in my head...

I don't tow, so I could care less about maintaining the stock tow rating. So adding a good rear bumper with an integrated skid & recovery point (or a hitch, albeit much higher) and a better departure angle seems like the best solution.

For those that tow, though, I can see keeping the stock hitch.

David, your second round of shots does look alot better. I kinda like it now. Maybe the focal length on the first shot exxagerated the profile of the rear bumper... Or maybe I didn't clean my glasses yesterday. Because it looks good in that side view.

So is anyone on here running th $G rear bumper on their DII?

I do like it, but the weld in hitch is only class 2 rated instead of class 3.

Mmmmmmmm eeeeeeyeeeahhhh.
I'm gonna have to go ahead and,
sort of,
disagreeeeeee with you on that one Will.

I think the SG is alright, but aside from the pain of trying to buy something from them I think the RTE bumper has it's advantages. I think it's a stronger unit and while not everyone is taken with the look of the bumperettes/nerfs I think they do serve a purpose. Particulary the one that protrudes past the rear tire and as such protects the rear door.

Jack,

Nice rig, you represent the Disco community well.

With $G I can attest to the bumperettes. One instance I slid sideways off a rocky trail into a large tree. Bumperette won.

BTW what tires are you running and are you happy with them. I'm considering staying with MTR's or going to Cooper STT's

As for draging our tails, my rear itches to be scratched now and then

Will,

I'm quite fond of your truck as well and always keep an eye out for pics of it.

I have 235/85 BFG MTs. Just switched from ATs a few months ago and am quite pleased. I think they are a good combination of an aggressive lug that wears well and is tough. I also like the stiffness of the load range E tires because rightly or wrongly I feel that they improve the road manners of a tall truck with no sway bars.

With 6 tires in rotation they should last me quite a while.

The RTE rear bumper is much better built than the $G. Stronger, simple design, and inexpensive in compairison. Steve has not offered one with a hitch for the liability reasons mentioned above.
If you don't like the edges on the bumpers just call Steve he is always willing to improve or adapt his products to the demands of the customers if he can. A good example is in the picture above of the Disco bumper with the rounded corners. Steve runs that style on his truck.
I also regret cutting the hitch off my RRover for the minamal(sp) benifit it provided. Now the hitch is so high I have to use a 8" drop for my utility trailer. I will try to post a pic. My bumper is a modified RTE bumper I built using parts from Steve's shop. I intergated a skid plate that make a $G plate look like a tin can. $G uses inadiquate skid plate attachments that bend way to easy. I have fixed several over the years for friends around here.

GotRovr,

I LOVE that shot of your Rover!

I think what I like most is the fact that it looks like it's just been waxed :D .

Well Kyle I am new too this Forum but your reputation preceeds you. WHAT IS ON MY ROOF is founctional piece equipment. I can Slide to RRover against trees without worries of bending the rack or the roof. I am 6'4" 260# and I can stand in the middle or the rack and it does not deflect. Currently my Spare tire rides up there and I use it regularly for transporting 24' lenghts of steel tubing. And it weighs less the 100 pounds. It isn't light but it is VERY functional for my needs. And I MADE IT!!

Here's a not so clean pic for the peanut gallery :D

The $G bumper attaches at the end of the frame and the inner fender. That is it without the skidplate option. The skid plate attaches to the bottom of the bumper edge and at the n bridges back to the rear antiswaybar mounts. The U-channel they use is very light and cannot take hard hits. It bends pretty easy!

My skidplate frame attaches at those points as well. but I also attached at the shipping anchor holes that are mid way between. also used 1.5x1 .125 tubing for the framework of the skid. Now the whole rearend is tied together. I still would not tow a 7000# trailer back there . mostly b/c the receiver is over 30" off the ground.

Also $G bumper is made of 3/16 folded. RTE like mine is square tube 1/8 with 1/8 plate over the top and 3/16 sides. If I'm not mistaken. I added the extra piece under the hitch 1/4 thick to tie the skid plate into.
