about to tear apart my hubs, what am I missing?

I had pretty much the same thing happen to me - my stub axle was toast. What happened on mine was that the bearing cage seized and pretty much 'weleded' the inner race to the stub axle along with a number of bearings. Unfortunately mine happened as I was on the highway. At lower speeds I may of got away with it.

I'm not near my workshop manual at the moment - but does anyone know what the average replacement interval is on the wheel bearings ?
