Replaced the sensor on my 03 due to an erratic signal, the plug just fell apart under the hood. Put new one in and it didn't have a plug so i just cut the plug off and wired it up. Cleared the codes and drive it about 200 yards and it chimes and 3 amigos pop up. Read the codes and I get output too low.
Any ideas?
If I were you I would next try splicing in the original sensor.
My truck had a right rear sensor fault a few years ago. I bought a replacement sensor, and like you, cleared the code but the Boys from South of the Border returned. I removed the new sensor and saw that there was evidence the reluctor ring had been rubbing against it.
The ABS system is very sensitive to the gap between the sensor and the reluctor ring being within tolerances. It's also well known that wheel speed sensor faults often result from problems with the connectors between the sensor and the wiring harness leading back to the SLABS.
I reinstalled the original sensor and cut out the connector, replacing it with a different weather-resistant connector. I believe I could have simply spliced the wires and achieved the same result, but five years later all is well.
Try reinstalling the original sensor eliminating the connectors, and let us know how that turns out.
