Searched high and low. Outside the controversy behind removing it, anyone done it that can offer some advice or hints? I have the pump off the car and and taking the rest off and putting regular sway bars with end links I can disconnect when offroad.

Do I need to install an idler pulley if I remove the pump completely? Mine broke and I've decided the hell with this system, it's the highest maintenance thing on the truck.

I keep finding conflicting info on different forums re the idler pulley

You don't need an idler to replace the ACE pump, you just change the belt, see below. You will need the last configuration.

The configurations are as follows:

All are for V8 Disco2, you don't have the TD5 (officially) in the USA:

Config A with everything fitted, belt number is ERR6896 (ignore item 10, that should not be on this drawing)

Config B with no aircon but with ACE, belt number is ERR6897 (item 7 should be with this drawing)

Config C with no ACE and no aircon, belt number is ERR6899:

Config D with no ACE but with aircon, belt number is ERR6898:

Hope that covers it.

west of the city...
FWIW, I used a belt for 4.6 non ace, drained some fluid out of the system, hooked the belt up w/o the ace pump in the loop, done. Will replace with sway bars at some point, but wheels fine. I don't understand why an idler pulley would need to be fitted in the ace pumps place?

no, there is an idler on there already, not installing it. i was thinking that it needed to be swapped for a different size, but looks like it doesnt.
