I want to install a multiple, cigarette lighter adapter, to charge my cell phone, operate a map light and run a GPS. What is the best way to wire the cigarette adapter so it only powers with the ignition or engine on? Many thanks!

Run an extra wire from the "on" or "acc" (if fitted) terminal on the back of the ignition switch. Make sure you include a fuse.

I've found that for what you want to use it for, always on works better. In fact, I rewired my Disco lighter so it's always on. That way when I'm out traveling, if, for instance, by cell battery is dead, I can leave it plugged in until charged without worring if the ignition is on or not.

I kinda figured. But if it's a cell phone or GPS, are you really likely to leave it plugged in that long? Map light I would assume you'd be turning out when you're done reading the map. Mine is actually rewired to my winch battery though.

If you're going to pick a switched wire from behind the dash to power up this splitter I would do it a different way. I would find any wire that is on with the ignition only and splice into that to a relay. Then run a new wire directly from the battery. I like to isolate any electricial circuit I add to my rover. I've seen way too many electricial fires or meltdowns to add off the existing equipment. Last week I saw a older cutlass on the side of the road on fire. I noticed one of these huge subwoofers on the ground behind the trunk. Whoever installed that stereo obviously didn't have a clue how to do it the right way.

It has been installed. Wired directly to the + battery with a in-line fuse. I guess I put to much thought into this. The unit was mounted on passenger side where the box glove is. If someone can share how to post pics, I would be more that happy to so so. Also installed an IPF back up light to a toggle switch and a CB with an external speaker (for obvious reasons). Many thanks to the board for all your help and suggestions. Next week I'll be in the UK for the first time (business), nice to go visit the LR Mother Land!!
