Gems is so much less problematic. No moving parts in the ignition system is a huge plus. The distributors have so many issues like water under the cap, modules and coils. The whole issue with the module getting too hot in its original location and being relocated to the bracket the coil rides on. Then I learned the hard way that the module takes the coil out. I learned that by replacing the module(no correction) took the module back out of the car and reinstalled the original then put a coil in it(no correction) left the coil in in and went back to parts for the module and installed it again with the new coil still in(fixed) So after going thru all that shittery once, I learned and used to put the coil AND the module in.

If I ever started going down that rabbit hole I'd just replace everything with the DUI HEI.

Live on the edge and sell the 2 cars that's not paid off. Scary just having rovers as your only vehicle?

Think having multiple Rovers is the key but isn't foolproof i.e. CBP seizes one Rover and the other loses a head gasket. I'm currently rolling the dice having only one in the driveway

Looks like the answer will be clear very soon. RRC blew the heater core this weekend, husband re-routed to get it home. Will put a new thermostat in it and see how it does. Engine still runs really strong! Rust is starting to become pretty obvious.

White 96 is going to start getting more attention/parts!

Does anyone have an appetite for adventure anymore? I'm about to sell my Cheaterwagen back to VW which will leave my household with one car: a 1998 Discovery. Fortunately my wife's office is at home and I commute by bike or train (recognizing that not everyone has that luxury), so having the Rover out of action for more than a weekend at a time is not a show stopper.

Is there anything wrong with the Cheaterwagen? I'd take whatever $$ VW may offer, and keep it.

Nothing wrong at all. In most ways it has been a satisfactory car: 40+ mpg, decent handling, decent performance, decent stereo, great for the dog, generally practical. I have some gripes with ergonomics and visibility, but it's a car I could happily live with for 10 years if I decided to keep it.

We're returning the car to VW mainly because after buying it we learned that we didn't really need a second car. Most of the time it is a welcome convenience, but it's not so handy as to be worth the cost of ownership. In evaluating our bigger picture, my wife and I decided that we would rather have the money (which we can put towards our medium-term goals, like moving to South Africa) than the car. Even if the cash payout from VW separate from the buyback is $7,000 we would still return it.

What's funny is that when we come home in the Jetta my wife and I both look at the Disco and say "That's so much more enjoyable to drive."
