A friend called me and told me that the airbags in his early 90'something Discovery I went off after he puched the dashboard. (Don't puch your Rover) Anyway he wanted to know how he should go about or around replacing the airbags. I don't have a clue. Any answers from some one with experience would help really help! Thanks.

First, I have plenty of air bags and can easily provide one for your friend for a fraction of the cost of a new one. I am not certain whether or not the deployment affects the ECU which is mounted under the cubby on the console. If, in fact you need to replace that, I have one as well. Most likely, you will need the dealer to reset the SRS sytem after you go through the process of replacing the parts you need.

As far as replacing an air bag, it's not any different from the process you use to remove the bag itself. First, disconnect the battery and give the system a chance to disipate any charge.

The air bag above the glove box on the passenger side is held in place with four safety bolts. You can remove them with a six point 8mm socket. To reach them you will need to remove the glove box. With the glove box out you will see a large block of styrofoam under the air bag. The bolts are near the corners of the styrofoam block. There are indents in the styrofoam allowing access to the safety bolts. They will be torqued on pretty tight so be prepared. Once the four bolts are removed you will be able to lift the ari bag up. There is a wiring harness attached to the air bag so carefully remove it and the air bag will come out. Installation is the reverse.

If you need any more help let me know.
Good luck,
Paul

Don't you need to replace the airbag module if the air bag ignites? Also, you may want to discharge static from your body by simpling grounding yourself on a metal object. In very rare instances ( I mean rare), airbags can be discharged by static electricity. This is part of VW technician procedures when work is done the airbag.

I wasn't sure if the ecu would be affected. I was told that after air bags are deployed in an accident it, along with the sensors mounted on the front frame horns need replacing. Since this air bag deployed because of direct physical contact it may have had nothing to do with either the sensors or the ECU.
