Air Intake Duct 01 vs 03 version

So i have noticed that the 2003 on version of the Air intake Duct or Air flow meter hose, has a rather large appendage on its side in addition to the small "Bottle" like the 01 version has.

Is this large "Box" necessary for the 4.6 L motor to breath right when you give it throttle?

Do i need to order one as i'm building a 4.6 from my 4.0?

If you stay with the smaller diameter 4.0 MAF than you would also use your smaller diameter intake tube. The 4.6 MAF requires the larger tube.

So it sounds like the 4.6 needs a bit more air if they have larger air components... But at least the Throttle valve is the same.

I don't think you really need to change. I did the same thing a few years ago and it ran fine using the 4.0 setup.

Yeah keep in mind the throttle bodies are the same.

The "appendage" is just to change or deaden the sound in the air induction tube I think . For a while that air inlet wasn't available and they were selling for over $300.
