I am looking at getting an air compressor to become a modern shade tree mechanic. What size is optimum, and what brands are considered the best. I will want to sand blast things ocasionally so keep that in consideration.

Get the biggest compressor that you can afford and have room for.

Stay away from oil-less/oil-free compressors.

stay away from campbell hausefeld (sp). Craftsman or ingersol are your best bet.

You'll also want a compressor with high CFM's. Some air tools, like a dual action sander, can require up to 17 CFM"s to run. Also, if you can afford it, a 2 stage compressor is always better than a single stage, but they make some good single stage ones too.
