All Dash Warning Lights - Reduced Transmission Power

I was riding offroad yesterday through 12 miles of lowlands with frequent wading (fresh water) up to hub height on the way to a nice sand point on the bay. I have had 2 previous "Suspension Failures" which I associated with water crossings but the Tech at the dealer says he did not think they were and did some reprogramming on Friday. I must add, I trust this dealer and tech.

I have also had 3 previous failures while driving on the highway where the amber "park brake" came on, the red "park brake" warnig light started flashing, there was a "transmission fault - limited gears available" and "transmission fault - power reduced (not exact)" series of warnings and my power was reduced. These were all reset by pulling over and restarting the car. The parking brake never actually applied itself in these previous incidents or yesterdays incident.

Today, I had the amber and red park brake lights, the "Suspension Failure" light with no warning on the Info panel other than a "Suspension Lowered" message and the suspension lowered to acess height, DSC Warning, airbag warning light, the Service Engine Light, and the Lo Range light were also on steady. The "Brake" warning light was on and the ABS failure and DSC warning lamps were also on steady. I was in lo range when this occured and was unable to shift into high range.

I also noted the Transmission Faults for "traction reduced", "limited gears available", "reduced power" and "range change unavialable." There was also a "Park Brake Failure - To hold vehicle ....." message and a "HDC System Fault - system not Available" warning messages. There was also a big "F" in the odometer display.

I had to drive about 12 miles at 5-6mph in 1st gear in low range in access mode back through the water I had previously crossed, now at access height! I also noticed the odometer was not clicking off miles during this leisurley ride!! As I got back to the main road two hours later I noticed the truck return to normal height and the "suspension failure" warning light went out. I stopped and was able to shift into high range and drive normally. I then stopped again and shut off the truck and this cleared the park brake lights and all was back to "normal." Two miles up the main road tow truck came around the corner and I let him load it up and take it to the Mobile, AL dealer (60 miles away). And all of this in front of a local Jeep club, how embarrasing!!

Has anyone else experienced this type of failure?

I had a similar experience early on - was traced to the wiring loom connector just in front of the air compressor, being either a) wet or b) loose. I opened it up, sprayed it with WD40, put it back together and tightened/bound the two halves of the connector together with steel wire.

Never had the problem since, except once when I forgot to fit my air-compressor plate (a steel one I had made up) and a large piece of wood once again loosened the plug (and snapped the compressor mounting), allowing mud into the connectors.

The other vunerable connectors are the ones behind a splash panel at the back of the rear axle (driver's side, in the USA).

I've waxoiled and tightened them all.

Cheers,

Gordon

Yeap, loose or corroded connector. Might also be the wheel sensor on the front right.

It's amazing isn't it. No matter how hurt the truck thinks it is, it still got you back. The limp home mode, while far too easily engaged, really does work.

Thanks guys. I'm off to the dealer to get my loaner and go selling all week! I'll see what they say and make sure they are aware of your comments. The Tech reads these boards and is a D1 and D2 owner. I think I'll get under it with the Tech and look at the compressor location/condition!!

As for "limp home", I stressed that point to the J##ps that were with me. They were very impressed with my LR3 and my Son's D2 regardless. I was very happy I was able to at least drive it out to a highway for pickup and could have driven it the 25 miles further home if needed.

Yeah, really impressive. A wet wiring harness caused all this......

This is the biggest flaw of all these newer vehicles - the computers.

Yeah, it _is_ the biggest flaw, but once you know about it, relatively straight-forward to protect against. At least they seem to have resolved the (made of butter) axles, toy cv joints, clutch fork made of tin, oil in the harness, jumping cam belt, electrics from the Dark Master and other such show-stoppers.

Cheers,

Gordon

Don't forget the extra strong u-joints and leaking oil seals!! I have one of each, and there is no comparison between them. The D2 is 1980s design, the LR3 is 2000s design. Each has it's own strengths and weaknesses. I could discuss the '76 Scout, but it went swimming and is having to dry out. It quit in only 4' of water when it got into the computer controlled 1970s design distributor and filled the 1960s designed Torque Flight transmission with water. It DID NOT limp home!!

Since Mobile, AL shuts down for Mardi Gras, I'll probably have to wait until Thursday to find out what it is.... Laissez Les Bon Temps Roule!! They did give me an '08 LR3 HSE to use until they figure it out.

What vehicle would this be?

D1 10-spline axles were a joke (even the 24-splined ones were pretty flimsy).

D1 handbrake died regularly in the mud.

TDI 300 cambelts snapped recurrently

TD5 ECU loom suffered from oil leaking into the harness

V8 4.6 lost cylinder sleeves

D1 clutch fork was made from some rather thin 'steel' material

cv joints on all bar the old County V8's were suspect.

I guess the point is that any vehicle has a weakest point. Luckily, so far (fingers crossed) the LR3s achilles heal seems to be avoidable with a bit of wire and a can of WD40.

A few have already passed 100 000km here in Oz, and some higher mileage ones are in the UK. No major mechanical gremlins to speak of, but I guess that something could still rear it's ugly head yet ......

Cheers,

Gordon

Wow. I had the same problem. I took it to LR Gulf Coast, and they changed out my HD rear end. All this happened back in March 07. I got the truck back in May of '07, and until January 20th I had no problems. Now the problem is back. I hope your LR Gulf Coast experiences are better than mine. Good Luck. Now I provide video to the service advisor along with pictures. (My infotainment system locks up and only plays 3 seconds of music, and of course no one can duplicate the problem.)

I like the little pig that's yelling at the lights.

I have 30k miles on mine (06HSE w/ HDpackage etc) and I've used it pretty hard off road a dozen times. I did get a transmission fault once in VERY deep mud, a restart fixed it. Never seen anything of this sort since. knock on wood

Micheal,

What year is your LR3? I noticed you didn't have the big "F" which I think stands for F@#k You, you've done it now!!!! I like your documenting technique, I use it also!!!

So far I have nothing but good experiences at GCLR. We have had a RR and a DII, neither of which we bought from them, yet they provided service like we did.

The seloniod locks up in them and sends a fault through the trans. The selonoid cannot be serviced, a whole new diff will need to be installed. This causes the special programs and the air suspension to become unresponsive. You have to shut down and restart to reset the system. A big pain till you get the update.

Is there a TSB on this?

Not sure if a TSB but for sure a common failure on the 05's. I had the same problems as you and had the replacement done. I had posted the codes thown for this at one time but i dont recall them off hand. Hopefully you are still under warrenty.

Got the '05 back. They changed the ABS/Dynamic Control unit. There were multiple "lost communications" errors relating to the unit. The Tech took it out wheeling (with my permission) and could not reproduce the failure. I have been driving it for a week now and have not really pushed it, no failure.

Just a little of this last weekend:
