Anybody looking for an alternative to the Rover V8 may be interested in a conversion project I have developed. I have been using the LS based 4.8L GM V8 to replace the 4.0 / 4.6 with very positive results.

So the obvious question is how much does it cost, and what do you get for that price?

Something that has been on my mind for a while.

The 4.8 has the least amount of torque of all the LS options. Torque breaks drivelines. So as long as its built to rev instead of having low end torque the driveline should be fine.

the complete 4800 conversion starts at $9500, ready to drive. The ZF HP22 and 24 both handle the additional power just fine. I have been driving a converted 2000 D2 for about 9000 miles and it has performed very well.

By ready to drive you mean installed?

The mileage numbers I have recorded so far have been good. I have been been getting 1-2 MPG better than what my 4.0 would give me in similar driving conditions. Some situations such as low range trail use I believe are returning about the same as what the 4.0 would do. I have not had any tanks of fuel where I believe I have gotten any worse mileage that the original setup. Obviously fuel mileage depends highly on the driver and how the vehicle is used.

As for warranty, I am offering the same 12 month limited warranty as I do on almost all of my repair work.

Much appreciated.

How does the engine interface with the existing electronics? What kind of engine management system are you using?

Would this kit be an option for older GEMS or 14CUX trucks?

This setup is using the existing Bosch 5.2.1 engine management, allowing me to keep every system on the car functioning. With my conversion, you don't lose ABS, Traction Control, HDC, A/C, cruise, ect. Every feature the D2 has before the conversion is retained. The only option I do not accommodate is ACE.

Just to be a dick-head here, but why would I spend 9500.00 (starting) for a "bit" more torque and 1-2 mpg improvement?

Small increase in reliability = 9500.00? Not in my book.

If you are faced with an engine replacement situation, buying a reman long block is going to run you about $7000, and by the time you add installation and incidentals you are right there at around $9000 anyway. This is just an alternate option, obviously not for everyone. I do believe it is more than a small increase in reliability.

Well to be fair you'd only be doing this if you had a blown engine so the real cost is the difference of $9500 and what it would cost to rebuild or replace your Rover V8. I've already done the math and it's about six grand to build an uber 4.6 with flanged liners and all new parts.

Your banking on a lot of people in your general vicinity having blown engines, beyond repair. Otherwise I'm looking at another 2-3K (more than that, if they have to flat-bed it) just to have it trucked out and back.

You going to buy an airline ticket to honor your warranty when my conversion goes tits-up?

Any pics of the accessory brackets?

How does the Bosch run it? Any pending codes, idle fluctuations or the like?

Having messed with the data lines from the body module to the gauge cluster I don't think it would be that hard to interface the gm Ecu output to the body/trans/etc, but would definitely take a specific skill set
