The v8 overhaul manual make reference to using Hylosil jointing compund.
It does not appear to be readily available here on the left side of the pond.
Does anyone know what a suitable alternative would be? I'm thinking that perhaps Permatex Ultra Blue would be a good substitute.

You should be able to get it from a LR stealership. I got a tube of it from LR dealer in parssippany NJ. I think I paid $8 for it.

Yes, I could order some, but is it necessary?

Hi,
I could probably order some, but is that really necessary?
Is the Hylosil superior in some way to the Permatex Ultra Blue?

Also, Hylosil, I believe is a Marston Lubricants brand name, So I don't quite under stand why it would be available at NAPA and made by Permatex. I looked on the Permatex and Napaonline websites and could not find it listed.

Do you mean Hylomar? You can get it at any parts store. Good stuff.

...well it looks like they have similar products. The overhaul manual specifically mentions Hylosil as being the needed product.
