My stock alternator took a dump this morning so i'm looking for another one and wanted some help.

Stealership has them for $464.03
British Atlantic $339.95 new
British Atlantic $249.00 reman
Advanced auto parts $198.88 reman

these are all 100amp amps. Or I could do the mean green one but dont know much about them.

I do have a warn winch on the front and was wondering about the bigger amps that I might need.

Which Alternators are most trucks running with the winches and lights on them.

I had opted for the Mean Green... terrible customer service, took them nearly a month to get it to me, and it took a crap after about two weeks. Looks like the regulator went bad, cooked my battery, blew the 100amp fusible link, and maybe fried my MFU. I'm having my original alternator rebuilt now.

im about ready to bail on the Reman alt... there is a local shop Autolectric which basicly rebuilds any DC motor or alternator ever made...

picked up a "rebuilt" alt from them... GREAT deal only $89.00... clean as a whistle, looked brand new...

in the last 2yrs have replaced it every 5-6 months or so... the ONLY reason i stick with them is cause they give you a 1yrs warranty... so bascially i have replaced 4 of them so far for free....

good news is... i can replace one in 15 min or less now.

bad news is... if they ever give me shit about replacing them so often... im just gonna buy a NEW one. sure it will cost me $400 but it would be nice not to have to replace the alt every other time i replace my oil

im with you on the rebuilts. they have the high potential to suck bad. I too can swap out the alt in like 20 mins now. i went through 4 rebuilts in 6weeks early in 2004. finally the guy at the alt shop took pitty on me and sold me a brand new one at cost. nicely done.

however if you are burning through them you may well just be getting lame units but one thing i discoverd after my 4th one came to a growling halt, was that that little shitty ass 8 inch length of positive cable that runs from the battery to the fuse box was loose. I hooked up my crappy radio shack $9 dollar battery/alt tester giggled the wire around a bit and found that the wire was intermittantly cutting the current in and out. i took the fuse box apart and undid the postive cable fastening screw and cleaned the cable connector off with a little fine girt sand paper and some CRC electrical connector cleaner, put it back in and tightened it down. the cable no longer cuts in and out but i was too late to save the 4th one so i now have a new alt that has been going strong since march of 2004.

i hope im not jinxing myself here.

I've been getting starters and alternators rebuilt by reputable automotive electrical shops for over 30 years, in all that time I've only had one premature failure, and they fixed it no charge on the spot. I don't have any empiracal data, but I have more faith in a rebuilt by someone who's been doing it for years and is paying attention, than I do in one put together on an assembly line by someone bored and zoning out thinking about the TV program they are going to watch that night.
This doesn't include reman's from discount auto parts stores.

Maybe I'm being cynical or stupid....but aren't they all rebuilds in the end? Thus the "core" charge most places require?

A friend of mine used to work for a factory that supplied alts, cv's, starters for auto companies...including the one that LR uses....they basically take the cores and "rebuild" them to "new" specs.

Seems like the exact same thing the shop who rebuilt my alternator last year did....so far so good. Only cost me $130.00 (Canadian dineros).

DO NOT BUY A REBUILT!!!!

I went through 5 in a month. The last one caught on fire. Put a new magnet murelli in, and it has lasted 5 years.
Spend the extra ca$h on this one.

I too am up a creek without any power.
I have been looking at rebuilds and taking it to a shop to have it done. Around here I am looking at $287.50 for a rebuild of my own.
Surfing the net here is what I've found:
Autoparts Warehouse $209.82 Reman
Roverconnection $210 Reman
British Pacific $314 - $363.50 New
(and the other info listed on the first post)

What is the difference between the AMR3107 and the AMR4247 ????? I am really confused about which one to order and the differences... because each one is listed for the 95 D1.

RoverChic advised that I buy a reman or a used one and rebuild my current one myself that way I will have a spare in case the inevitable happens again. Me thinks I will take that advice.

Hey Jason, yeah my original Alt just died (wouldnt charge) and now three of the last four (including the one in my DI right now are dying the "howling/growling" kind of death... my guess is the bearings they use are SHIT... that is if they use new bearings... im beging to wonder if the shop is just "regreasing the bearings" and replacing the "diods" what ever the hell those are...

then when the alt grease runs out and they start howling/growling the extra friction starts to build up heat which kills the "diods"... cause the last three died the same death...

start howling/growling...
then tach starts bouncing...
then battery starts slowly dying
then i have to replace alt

it runs quite for a several months
then howling/growling starts up...etc...etc...etc...

Hey Thomas you said "Maybe I'm being cynical or stupid....but aren't they all rebuilds in the end?"

hummm... i dunno... but if im gonna spend $400 on what is advertised as a new alternator... god darn it... it better be brand new

course who knows.. the rebuilts ive been getting all "look brand new"

guess the expectation is that if i have to spend the money for a "new" one it sure as HELL better last more then 6mo

How did you hear it going? I have a 5 speed and I can barely hear anything. :D

I just got off the phone with the guys at Cannibal and I'm thinking of getting a used one off a wreck. Thoughts.

"How did you hear it going? "

well since aquiring my P38 i let my mom use my DI now a days...

"now theres a funny sight.... 60yr old short Japanese woman driving a lifted 95 DI with plenty of trail pinstriping, rock sliders, lights, brush bar and lots of little dings from off road trips... who regularly parks in hadicap parking spaces (shes disabled and has the correct placard)

anyway this is how i "hear it", she calls up and says "Hey, the Land rover thing is makeing a funny growling noise"

i say "anything else wierd going on??" (getting the "real" story is always like pulling teeth...)

to which she replies "hummmm... no not really... well that number thingy next to the speedo keeps bouncing around all crazy every now and then..."

i say "how long has that been going on?????

she says "oh a few weeks..."

i say "okay what else...."

she says "yeah and today the battery light was flickering on and off...

i say "okay bring it over, sounds like i need to replace the alternator again..

she says "AGAIN... $@!$#@!$%#$ "

i say "okay thats fine just bring the LR back and you can drive your other car... Oh wait a minute you dont have another car :p

Any way......

"I just got off the phone with the guys at Cannibal and I'm thinking of getting a used one off a wreck. Thoughts."

My standard line... make sure you get the latest model with least # of miles on it

you might luck out buying a used one- it may hae been replaced at some point before the truck was junked.

AMR3107 is for 94-95 AMR 4247 for 96 and later

Don't buy rebuild. Why put up with all the BS that remans cause by quick failure of remans?

Mine is a new ABP

ive been through 3 in 2 years (all rebuilt by rover shops) and now i can change one out in 7 minutes. ;)

my next alternator will be a Delco- buy it from vato-zone and they will replace it with a lifetime waranty... depending on your truck, all you need is a little bracket fabbed up and splice a wire.

Geeez, I am apprehensive to post on this for fear of jinxing my luck.
My original started to howl around 80K.
Reman after going to several shops where they all said we don't touch those $#@%@$ Murelis alts. Well to me that means they want to see me their stock only, so goodbye.
So after the same research as posted above, I decided on a Bosch Reman.
Better warranty than a new alt.
So far, 8 months and counting, going strong and it has seen alot of water and mud to boot.
Knock on wood baby!
As for a starter, replaced mine with a new LR OEM, at $145.
BTW, don't ask how I came about that price, it was a favor.

I replaced my alternator shortly after buying my D1- so it's got a couple years of use on it. It's an AutoZone cheapo and still workin.

I have mixed feelings now. My old alt (Mirelli)is being rebuilt as we speak, and incidentally enough the Bosch Reman I bought from NAPA($423.00 - 2 year warranty) is only putting out about 12 volts. I replaced the battery thinking this is not my alt going bad., nonetheless it is the Alt (Bosch) that is failing. Someone posted on here a couple months ago that the Bosch Reman have like a 40% failure rate.

If this one takes a nosedive then I am going brand new and getting my money back from NAPA. It's sad when you can change the alternator in the parking lot in less than 20 minutes..People look @ you sort of funny when you carry a 13mm breaker bar. ;)
