Charlotte might be a bit of a step coming down from Raleigh in a rover,

I see lot's of comments like the above and I always wonder about them. I've driven my series rovers all over the east coast, and drove my Air Portable with no top or doors from Cleveland to Madison, WI. Made many a trip in it in summer and winter blizzards from VT to NJ and VA (I did have the top on during the blizzard :p ).
Or have people just gotten spoiled by AC, heat and independent suspension?

I drove the beast 9,000 miles once in 19 days. I was in Blowing Rock last weekend, and I will be in Asheville this weekend, I easily put 2000 miles a month on the beast. I drive from Wake Forest, a little north east of Raleigh to Asheveille at least twice a month, and sometimes the trip is up on a weeknight after reqular work, and back the next night. I find it funny that folks think it is such a big deal.

Maybe it separates at us old coots. Trundling along in an IH, 57 ford or chevy pick up isn't much different then traveling in a series.

Who knows?

Tom,

Yeah, everyone has gone soft. I drive my 109 everywhere and it just goes. I've done the Raleigh-Charlotte run a number of times with no worries. Also I cruise up and down I-85 between Charlotte and Clemson a lot with no problems. Driven all over the Appalachian mountains, Tellico, etc. I have haven't had any problems  . I daily drive my 109 and love it.

Of course, new seats make it a REAL smooth ride :D .

I remember one time going from VT to NJ, in my Air Portable, when I had the rag top on it. It was/is NATO camo, including the top. I was heading just south of Albany, NY and as I merged with another interstate as luck would have it I came up just on the tail end of a convoy from one of the local Army bases. So I trundeled along behind them for about 10 miles or so, until I saw up ahead an MP at an exit directing the convoy off. Of course, as I was going to NJ, I continued on south. I laughed my ass off as the two MP's started jumping up and down waving their arms as I drove on by them, I guess they thought I was missing the exit.

I could see them out the rearview mirror waving frantically at me after I passed. I think then they say the VT 6A666 tag, realized I was a civy and stopped their efforts. :p
