i'm going to Amicalola National Park for some camping and light wheeling that weekend. i'm going with some guys from Expedition Portal, but anyone else is welcome. the trip consists of me and one other disco, and then a few assorted makes.

the trails aren't difficult by any means, but they are fun, offer some challenges, and are incredibly scenic. we'll be doing mostly exploratory stuff. it should be a great weekend.

i'm going up friday night, but most people are meeting up at the Chevron on the corner of GA-53 and Steve Tate.

Amicalola is about an hour or so north of Atlanta. i'll be traveling a little over three hours for the trip.

if you want to go, post up.

here are the pictures from my new years trip there.

Amicalola is actually a State Park which abuts the Chattahoochee National Forest. The NF is where the primitive camp sites and trails are. ;)
Though they've closed some of the trails. :(
There's one place at N34 36.007 - W84 13.369 where people keep going around a mud hole. I'm worried they'll close that one too. I go up there fairly often because I have a geocache on Old Bucktown Rd.

shoot i meant NF. i always do that. i don't plan on going into the park at all actually. i always enter via some back roads into old bucktown.

speaking of which, what's the link to your geocache? bucktown is the main road we're going on.

Too many?
nope. we may split into two groups, but we'll decide when we get there. there are 13 confirmed, with two maybes.

so about four LRs, a jeep, two unimogs, a pinz, a couple fjs, some pickups, and a 4runner or two.

it'll be sweet.

when do you plan on leaving? i'm leaving auburn between 3 and 4 on friday afternoon. i may wait till five so that ATL won't be AS bad...

OFFICIAL MAP TO CAMPSITE:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sou...4.504293,-84.103088&spn=0.29877,0.690765&z=11

for the Friday crowd, i will be at the McDonald's parking lot (point B) probably close to 9pm, possibly earlier, possibly later. We will be camping somewhere between C and D Friday night, and the official camp for Saturday night will be closer to point D. just follow the map, and preferably have a GPS and you should be fine, even at night time. these are small roads, so take you time.

For those Going in the morning, meet at site A. that is where the guys from ExPo decided to meet, as it is between hwy 400, and 515 for easy access to everyone, coming from any direction. the majority of the people will be meeting at A on saturday, and will drive to the campsites between C and D to set up. once y'all get to A, a guy named Bill in a red 2-door Jeep JK will lead the way to the campsite the quickest way possible. he knows the area better than anyone else.

the trails are basically where we are camping, but i let them off the map to avoid confusion. there should be maybe twenty miles of trail riding saturday, maybe more maybe less. and sunday as well.

i will post up exact meeting times next weeks. looks to be about fifteen different trucks.

and better news is... SNOW and LOTS of it there right now. hopefully it lasts a few more weeks...

Michael,

I was just up there yesterday for hike to the top of Springer Mtn. with the wife and dogs. There was snow halfway up to the AT approach trail on 28(Nimblewill Church). Most was ice as the snow had begun to melt and refroze. The drive up to the state park from the junction with Old Bucktown(lunch spot on the last trip) looked pretty hairy as it was mostly ice. I suspect all ice/snow will melt as we're supposed to hit the 60's tomorrow.

As a side note top of Springer Mtn. had about 3-4 inches of snow at the Southern Terminus of the AT.
