Another Discovery 2 V8

Got tempted by a 'Barn Find' D2 on fleabay, had a look at it yesterday, 64k miles, aircon, no ACE, manual box, 5 seater, $1450. Sunroofs leak, bit damp inside, trim etc undamaged but a bit of mould around. Mileage confirmed by annual inspection records, it has covered 200 miles in five years.

Bit of a project, but both ours and our son's V8s are running OK, but mine needs an oil pump/timing cover change and some chassis welding or put the chassis under it that we had shotblasted etc 5 years ago.

V8's are cheap in the UK where the TD5 is the preferred engine.

Looks like the ECU and the BCU have stopped talking to each other, so that's the first job.

Hired a trailer for tomorrow, 108 miles each way to collect, not bad at all.

Picked it up today, trailered it back home.

7-seater on coils, side steps, both Cats have been stolen, manual sunroofs with running water option, but new seals will be with us tomorrow (genuine seals from our main dealer are cheaper than buying on ebay) New discs and pads ordered, new tyres going on next week, then I'll look at the exhaust as a whole and decide what to do.

I have a new front end with cats, new stainless centre box and good used rear box, so probably best to change the lot.

Everything feels so 'new', the steering has little slack in it, the seats are nice and firm, if a little damp.

Radio is missing, aircon will probably need a refill and no ACE to worry about.

The R380 isn't a bad box at all, and I much prefer it for towing than an automatic ZF four-speed.

It has its own problems, but generally it is pretty strong and more than adequate for most drivers.

I'd always include the oil cooler, it is a pumped lubrication system and the cooler is a good accessory to have.

I thought you guys over there didn't like manual boxes?

Over here, the V8's are expensive to run, but they make great towing cars.

I prefer the manual box, my son has a D2 ES with auto box, the 'new' one is manual again, but I noticed today that no oil cooler is fitted. I might add that at a later stage.

TD5 diesels are more popular than the V8's in the D2 range, but they really need chipping to get any go out of them, and they have a lot of problems with fiddly bits on the fuel supply side and other related parts.

A good V8 is knocking out 180+ hp, a TD5 is 130+ hp.

If you are towing at maximum weight, that extra 40+ hp is a godsend.

Actually the D2 4.0 is rated at 188 hp and the 4.6 is rated at 217 hp.
which one did you get?

Not hard to build a 4.6. All you would need is the crank and rods. Keep your pistons if they are the high compression type and maybe a cam to pep it up a bit.
