Another ticking engine II

This is the '98 50th edition LSE that I had shipped from NC as no one there could get it to run so I had it shipped to my mechanic in Scottsdale a year ago who maintains my other D1 & LR4 and finally got it to run after a lot of trial and error mainly remedied by a new ignition and fuseblock. My mechanic said the truck had piston slap which would disappear under load but this noise is something different and today I will check for rocker arms as this noise only happens when the engine is warm but has plenty of compression. Engine has 155K miles and my concern is even replacing lifters and cam may still have the same tick / knock and I will have spent $3k more and might have to replace the engine in the end anyway.

Nowadays, that's $9K for an Atlantic British long block and another $4k for labor to install for a truck that would never sell for that and I have a lot into it already. My quesiton for the brain trust here is what progressive steps should I take to get this sorted before I cry uncle and bail.

That would be the worst lifter tick I ever heard. In my experience the rocker shafts last a very long time, but maybe there's enough lash due to a failing lifter/cam. It sounds sharper than piston slap; that's usually dull and goes away when warm. Almost sounds like a rod bearing, especially if it gets louder with revs. Could be a sleeve tapping, but I haven't heard one that bad.
