I'm looking to learn how to use autocads dynamic constraints and parameters.

I wish i had revit but i dont, but i think autocad is capable of what i'm looking to do.

I want to draw a pipe column, with an arm. then be able to change the column diameter and arm reach and be able to quickly pull a dimension from base of column to end of arm for my shop guys to make sure the arms are mounted perpindicular on the columns.

what version are you using? I know the newer versions can do it and I may try to figure it out at work, but the world has moved on and you'll be hard pressed to find a non acadamia employed expert in paramaterizing autocad. There are so many better 3d parametric software packages, some even cheaper than autocad.

now autocad electrical is pretty fuckin sweet once you tie it in to inventor. draw a model, draw a schematic, link them and plot your nailboard.

Google sketch up is pretty sweet. Friend at work is really good at it. It might be able to do what you want. There are loads of different plug ins for it. If you do a lot with pipes get Pipe Along Path. It will make whatever pipe diameter, wall thickness you specify and build it along any line you draw. The whole thing Is free too.

Autocad I'm sure will do it, I'm not very good a it to tell you how.

It's been a while since I took that autocad class in college...All I remember is thinking that "Osnap" was funny.

Though not a funny command, I liked fillet. Just made me happy. Then again I started with commands (version 12), skipped 13 and used a tablet with icons for a long time. Had full ass digitizing drafting table too. Old school bitch.

R13 was the first time ACad tried a GUI a'la windows. It was an unstable dog.

I don't know shit about mechanical modeling.

using 2011 now i think, could upgrade to 2012 but no point yet. I have no plugins. and trying to get IT to swith my seat to Revit. I almost finished what i was trying to do just using dimension constraints and some simple parameters. thanks
