Any built 300tdi D1 owners here?

Just curious as to what the motor behaves like having that extra weight to haul around from larger tires and gear.

If you make sure you have the correct transfer case (1.4 high ratio) and re-gear the diffs accordingly you should be fine. Otherwise you are asking a lot from an already hard working engine.

If you have the ZF tranny you may not be happy. With the R380 it wont be too bad. A bit slow off the mark but fine once you are up to speed.
On long grades in the Blue Ridge with a/c on I find myself wishing for more power.

Im not looking for all out speed but something that can get the job done but also deliver more range out of the tank. I did the math and a switch to 4.10 gears is about the same as the switch to 1.4 transfer case gearing. Ill still be using the ZF but itll be a diesel specific one. 2.8's are ridiculously priced right now.

I get about 450 miles to a tank. I can cruise about 75 on the interstates, about 3000 rpm. No problem in the mountains. I use steep dirt roads a lot but not much off road.
I think the auto box would turn it into a dog.

No experience with the 300Tdi, but the torque of the the 2.8 is awesome. When pulling the trailer with the motorcycle on it with the V8, it was sluggish or labored. When I pulled it with the diesel, I forgot I had a loaded trailer behind me. That and 26 mpg.
