My dad has a 96 XJ6 VDP, LWB...and I have a question for you!

Also, I'm looking at getting a newer X-type as a commuter....

:D Hey, atleast it's British! :D

No, I'm not an owner, but, MY MOM JUST BOUGHT a new X-TYPE 3.0 for a commuter car! (no, this ain't that "my mommy and my daddy has 'dis and 'dat" post). Plush on the inside, looks good on the outside, and it's AWD. It feels just as quick as my IS300 too. Very nice car and with a warranty WHO CARES THAT IT'S BRITISH?!?!? :D

We had a 2000 3.0 (my wifes). Basically, she hated it, too many little problems and traded it in on an 04 Cadillac SRX (what a great ride)

Hmmm, that doesn't sound good. I'm hoping the reliability is getting better! If I buy new, I don't want to work on it as much as my Disco (which has been relatively problem free in relation to other Rovers).

NorCal, I love them...for the look of the XJ, in AWD and new...the price is great and they are a bit sportier for someone like me! :) I haven't driven one yet, so we shall see.

Bcroz,
My mom just bought an 04 Deville (her HUNDREDTH caddy it seems) and it's great. i'm sure the SRX is too. I just prefer the Jag. Do you know if they have improved since 2000? I've read some bad reviews about the 2.5s....

My dad's XJ is awesome, and would be a perfect commuter, but we're looking for something newer. His radio keeps shorting out...well, actually, it will just freeze up where none of the buttons work-it was a replacement from the stock one and his local Jag dealer said they just do that?! WTF?! I thought someone might have heard of a similar problem.

Thanks for the responses!

Early X-Types had some issues. '03 less than previous years. By 2004, almost all the bugs are worked out. I love my '04. It has everything you want in a Jag at a great price. Check the dealer for crazy cash back right now on '04.
Get the 3.0 over the 2.5. That extra 35HP is well worth the $500. Drive both and you'll know what I mean.

XJ's are real nice. Classy and powerful. But be sure to check them out if your thinking of buying one used. Especially if it's out of warranty. Give the R's a real hard look. Like any other performance machine, they tend to have been whooped on.

Jags are much like Rovers. There are good ones and there are bad ones.

Buying a used XJ is the worst advice in the world! They are pieces of sh!t to put it lightly. If you think you spend a lot on maintaining your Disco, just wait until you buy a XJ. Our X-type hasn't been too bad. It's an '02 3.0. Pretty much the same as the Disco...minor annoyances but no serious mechanical problems (less the new tran.ny at 4k miles). I would recomend a used one as they are cheap. By the way, our '02 has 82k on it now so it has been well used.

Curtis,
My dad's 96 XJ has been fabulous...just that radio issue.....why do you think they are shit?!

Ron,
Have you found an XJR yet? I looked at one on Ebay the other day....NICE

RRHP,
Good to hear some comments about the 04s. I really do think, if I don't get a Freelander, I'll go with the X-type. Love the combination of class and AWD with reasonable price.

One more question for the X-type owners:
How is the head/leg room? I've heard it's limited in the backseat. I'm not too concerned about that, because we still have 2 rovers for hauling...but could my husband who is 6'3" fit comfortably in the front?! :)

probably not...I am 5'11" and I fit, but it is tigtht. And forget about rear seat leg room. There is none! The reason I say that about XJ's is that EVERYONE I know that has one or had one hated it. They all had major quality issues at some point or another. Between an XJ or X-type, I would go for the X-type any day. AWD, newer, younger image, much better built, etc

I don't currently own a Jag, but I've been working on a '58 XK150 up at the shop. There are several XJ's up there too. You can get older ones dirt cheap these days. "Average" people are scared of them! lol! But it's the same fear people "not in the know" have of Land Rovers. They have the same issues as Land Rovers of the sames year. Lucas Electronics, poor maintenance my previous owners, etc. I don't have the link handy, but there is a company these days that makes a 'kit' to drop a SBC (350) into an XJ. I find that intriguing, but if I were to own one, I would keep the original engine, but that's just me. Kinda like pulling out the heart of the car. Jag has been building that same V6 or a version thereof in Coventry for the past 50 years. Kinda like our beloved Rover V8. The other day I looked at an S type for my wife. I told the dealer, the engine looked almost like the one in the '58, I had been working on, but with alot less wires on top. He wasn't impressed! lol!

Bryan,

Wow! That green one sure is pretty! I couldn't tell on the brown one, but it sure it nice that it has carbs! I HATE to mess with old Fuel injection systems! Alot less to worry about.

Why don't you request the Moss Jaguar catalog and get a feel for parts.

No kidding on the green one. Don't really love the color or the price, but just wanted to throw them out there. A while back, someone here posted a similar vehicle for sale with a bunch of parts. Now I am keeping the eyes peeled for the right combo of price and condition.

Just requested a catalog. Thanks. I hope you mean from http://www.mossmotors.com.

Yep, that's the catalog.

Yes, I too remember someone on Dweb selling an early XJ. Yes, that green one is pricey, but it sure is pretty!

You know it's cheaper in the long run to buy a restored car that to do it yourself. The trick is to find the right one. Find a guy that has spent some bucks, but it throwing in the towel! Or the guy, that is "done" and ready to move on to the next project.

Yes. I'm 6'3" 240 and I've had plenty room to spare...

Ok, not to stir the fire....but...how can Curtis be 5'11" and think it's tight, and Alex be 6'3" and think it's fine?!

Guess I need a test drive! :)

Bri,
That green one is AWESOME!

Okay now...I am 5'11" 180#. I fit okay, but I have the seat reclined pretty far back. It is not uncomfortable by any means but a little more room would be nice. I just can't see anyone that is 4" taller than me fitting comfortably. Like you said, go for a test drive. Again though, DO NOT BUY NEW!! These things lose more value after a year than a Disco (yes that is possible). Between my current Disco (which is for sale CHEAP on this site) and the Jag, I have lost over $40,000 in two years!! Yikes!! Granted, we drive a lot, but that is obscene. The pic in my profile was sent to me by a friend overseas. A very large coil fell off the back of a semi into the Disco on the highway. Where in Chicago is you sis thinking of living and working?
