any manual shift D90s w/detroit locker here?

I have a Discovery with manual trans. that is a daily driver. I wouldn't think twice about a detroit on road if it were an auto. Do you mind your detroit locker on road? Does the manual trans. cause it to lock up and unlock too much?
Thanks,
Dave

I do not know if it is the locker in the rear or the true trac in the front but if I take the foot off the accelerator in a turn the D-90 tends to bite and oversteer, hard enough that I need to be aware. In the snow it just wants to go straight, so they are useless for that. I get the occasional pop from the rear end but nothing to be concerned about. From personal experience it will definitely change the driving characteristics of your 90 so if you are concerned about the glitches I have found then maybe look at an ARB. More moving parts but no change on road. If your not concerned, then take the bomb proof reliability of the Detroit products.

To answer your original question about the manual causing it to unlock and lock too much I would say no.

Thank you guys. I have a pretty good understanding of how it will behave now.
I'm trying to decide if dual truetracs or just a detroit in the rear would be best for me. My concern for the detroit is snow driving (which was mentioned), but with a light foot it should be okay with the CDL unlocked.

DaveC, I posted a similar Q in an existing RRC thread HERE

http://www.discoweb.org/forums/showthread.php?t=47283&page=7

and didn't get too much of a straight forward answer. I too have a D1 5-speed and looking into getting lockers (Detroit/TT) in the near future. I would guess that with the 5-speed, when you let off the accelerator or push in the clutch, because of the manual gearing, the axles decelerate quick enough with enough resistance that it may act simliarly in an auto like brake modulation to cause the locker (TT) to engage.

I'm wondering if with the Detroit in the rear and a TT up front it may make it a real chore to daily drive around town and what it may do the R380, steering components, quicker tire wear, etc...

IMHO from my limited research and confusion about lockers in a Manual R380 Disco it seems that a Detroit in the rear is a good choice. An ARB in the rear is a good choice and a TT in the rear is a decent choice. For the front, it seems that the TT up front is a decent choice, but a Detroit may not be best and an ARB would be the best choice. It also seems that ARB's front and rear would be the best possible choice.

I think that I will put a Detroit in the rear and see how that goes for my off-roading style. Then reasses the situation: $$, wheeling, HD components, etc... when I am ready for a front locker. I may be completely wrong, but trying to figure it out to do it right the first time within my budget.

Asolo3j, Thanks for responding. I don't think I need the full locker for my use. Truetracs would give added traction and durability, and I can use the winch when needed. Although, the detroit option would be the easiest traction gain because it's always locked, whereas a truetrac takes brake modulation (not as easy with a 5-speed). The dual truetrac idea would allow the use of CDL on snow covered roads and probably be better for a daily driven truck that sees most of it's time on the road. Plus their much stronger than the stock diffs.

Well, I like dual Tru-tracs, but it's a much better choice for an automatic. The reason being, to get maximum benifit out of the Tru-tracs (ie less wheel spin, quicker lock up), one needs to do some left foot breaking. I have the TT/DL combo in my DII. Left foot brake draging makes a big difference in the vehicle's ability to handle rocks, ledges, etc. So, when I got the D90, I put the same set up in it. For the most part, it doesn't snow where I live, so thats a non issue. However, I have found it quit challenging to drag the brake, feather the clutch and step on the skinny pedal all at the same time. Lack of brake drag limits the TTs performance. Thus, I will probably replace the TT with an ARB in the 90. Hope this info helps.

Thanks, that does help. I'm leaning toward the detroit now because it makes sense with a manual. All the previous posts have convinced me that it will be fine on road, and offroad the five speed makes things challenging enough.

I have a Detroit in my 90. Can't tell it is there. I drive on snow and ice all the time. I notice no difference from the stock diff other than more traction off road.

Detroit not a problem at all. Prefer the Detroit in the rear anyway. Have the Detroit Trutrac in the front right now. May go ARB in the front in the future. The manual tranny does not cause any ill effects whatsoever with the Detroit in rear....
