Colorado's weird. you could have a snow storm one day, and have it melted the next. Or like last season, you could have snow in your front yard for 6 weeks. September and October you should have leaves changing colors and some snow. Nov and Dec definitely snow.

Main roads will be free of snow.......most of the time.....head off the main I70 and expect some compacted snow covered routes and ones that get cleared. Depends on the day....I think I 70 got blocked about 6 times this winter and was compacted snow ....lots of times...

I used to check the road camera's on the web before setting out.

Higher trails usually close late september really depends on the weather.....

October check the weather before setting out on the high trails if they are still open.

The main roads ski-place to ski place are usually pretty clear...but 4wd is a major help.

I thoroughly enjoyed my winter here and snowboarded every weekend
the local place is powderhorn-not great but way enough for a beginner/intermediate...............plus $ 350 for a season pass was an offer from god.

Started off on my arse.....and progressed to controled high speed descents by the end of the season..

I'm gona miss it here

I was in Colorado in June, and it was flurrying on me on I-70 going from Vail to Denver at the entrance to the Eisenhower tunnel... nothing accumulating, mind you, but was neat to see snow in June....

FWIW....

LOTS of Aussies (and Kiwis) work in the ski areas during the winter so there is lots of work to be found. Winter wheeling can be tough since many of the trails are impassable with snow but there are some at lower elevations. The guys from Grand Junction that replied are in one of those areas. Check out the www.bushducks.com site if you want to get an idea when some of them open up.

gmookher: NJ to GJ: wow what a change! My wife's a jersey girl and if I have to hear again how bad the Italian food is in CO...

Check out the Solihull Society website. (www.solihullsociety.org) We have a very active Land Rover club in Colorado. We would be happy to help you with any planning or logistics. We have a National Rally late every summer. The Rally alternates between Moab, UT and somewhere in Colorado. This year's rally will be in Montrose, CO. Over 150 trucks have preregistered for this year.

Colorado ranges from plains to high desert to alpine mountains. From basically Sept to May the climate can be wild. Early fall can hit 90 degrees F OR blizzard conditions. Middle of the winter, +70 degrees F or -30 degrees F. Spring can be well, spring :D in which we can have summer and winter within a 2 day span.

Overall Fall is beautifull while Spring is usually the wildest weather. Average temp depends on altitude. But realistically one should be prepared for the extremes, not average. It is not unusual for temps to vary 50+ degrees in a single day. Clothing strategy? Layers.

Gas prices are running $3.20US/gal premium. Prices go up middle of May and down in the Fall. It's the tourist season (May-Sept) surcharge.

Depending on how good our winters are off-road trails are mostly closed by Oct/Nov with some not opening until July. My gut feel says another good winter like we had in 2006/2007, back to normal. Lots of snow and several blizzards that shut down the state for 2-3 days at a time.

Most of the trails in Northern Colo are open in the winter, and you are really close to RMNP up here. It's the springtime when the trails get shutdown because of the runoff and trail damage can occur. Dec would be good, but like someone else mentioned, the high country trails can be impassable when hit hard with a southern storm. Especially if this coming winter is like the last. (I hope).
