while my disco is getting a head job and front cover my tools felt lonely so the washer shit the bed pan.

its a maytag SAV571EEWW - from what I have found, an Amana unit when Amana was sold to Maytag, hence the item number not matching the manuals. Anyhow, the damn thing will shut down about 10 second after it starts a cycle. It will fill with water, start, and then shut down. The motor turns, if I change the setting to rinse it will spin for five mins and complete the spin cycle so it leads me to believe the motor is ok.

I am narrowed down to a timer, or control board.

Actually I am about 30 fucking seconds from throwing it away and buying a new one but the tools wanted some use.

does it make sense to throw a timer at this thing? I have read they go bad, its a plastic body style.

anything else to look for, besides a new car and washing machine?

Try some of the appliance repair forums. I've had very good luck fixing washers, dryers, and my fridge. Try repairclinic.com for parts.

First off pull the front panel, two clips at the very bottom , or 5/16 screws depending on the age. Make sure the center bearings/ seal are not failing. Look above the transmission, if the seal is bad you'll see black shit flung all over the inside . If the bearings are bad, you'll be further ahead to buy new.

The issue your describing sounds like a failed timer. You can pull the "shroud " off the timer and check for burnt contacts, that would be the easiest way of ruling that out.

thanks, I had done a good bit of online research. ended up taking a shot and ordered a timer which could be returned if it did not fix the issue. Also ordered a new washer in the event it did not fix it. the 100 dollar new timer fixed the issue. apparently the new age timers are all plastic and go bad more often than ever before.
