I've seen and heard of plenty of blown diffs and broken CV's but has anyone broken a D2 rear axle? Just curious really.

Under any particular circumstances Kevin? I've heard of them breaking with way oversize tires and lockers but I've never seen the evidence. Seen it happen to Derek's D90 a few months back.

its actually a 2" OME with 2" TodCo spacers. It has been great. Once I took off the rear sway and put some long travel shocks + retainers I can get some pretty good flex. I ran my 285/75s for a couple years with no problems other than the rear axle shaft. Im now on 35s and loving it (after GBR HD shaft replacement)!

I'm curious about the likelihood of this too. I run 33's with rear ARB locker with 3 in lift and run hard rock trails (but not a gotta break it kinda driver). I have this feeling that its any moment and it will break but I don't want to shell out $700 for HD axle but maybe I should just wait until I break and then put one in...

ange87-
Betcha a milkshake you break your diff at the same time. Then it turns from a $700 upgrade to a $1,500 fix.

I ran my arbs with stock axels for a VERY short while, no damage but the splines appeared ever so slightly bent, took alot more hammering to get the longer side out than the short

-arb
-32" Maxxis MTs that bite
-lots of high traction slickrock out here

All I can say is if youre gonna wheel it on rock gardens and such, why wait to see if the OE stuff breaks? If youre gonna lock it up DL or ARB, my feeling is upgrade the axels. My diffs (OE )went 1st, and some of the wheeling out here is so remote feeling, coming from the eats coast, I rather upgrade to insure against a long hike or a feild fix, but thats just me.

Word has it you dont NEED to go HD axles with a TT- has ANYONE busted a OE axle shaft with a TT would be a better question, seems general concensus is if you lock=upgrade the axles.

meh. i have ARBs and stock axles. the ARB is pretty resistant to shock loading and spare axles are cheap so it is a no brainer to me to just have spares. ARB's warranty department is cool, too. they've been known to warranty parts that have been used in competition.

Yes. Upgrade the axles along with the diff. More expensive in the short term, worth it in the long term.

I've hammered mine pretty hard. 33's (KM2's), T.T.'s and CDL. Knock on wood, still going strong. Still, I'm saving for the HD stuff.
