I am in need of a new alternator for my 97 D1 4.6. I appreciate any recomendations on a quality dealer, rebuilder or person to buy a new alternator from. A quality part is my greatest concern, a good price is my next.

Thanks for the help!

I got one from Napa for my DII at a 1/3 the price of the dealer.

I've had the Mean Green on the D1 for a long time now.. can't remember where I bought it. I've said it before and I'll say it again, lifetime warranty doesn't mean that much when you are sitting in the middle of nowhere at 3 a.m. where your cell phone doesn't work.

Go with Mean Green or Premier

New Magna Mirelli from AB (I think, may have been RN?) going on 2.5 years, was a decent price and no problems so far.

Thanks for all the rec's!

Even though I found many types of remans in the $100 range and many aftermarket new alternators in the $200-$350 range I ended up purchasing a Brand New Marelli AMR4247 for $378 from http://www.autopartsfair.com/. (see later comment about horrible customer service) They had the fastest shipping available (that was free!) and since I waited to the last minute speedy delivery took priority over best price.

I did find a Brand New High Output Marelli 120amp AMR4247A alternator at: http://roverconnection.com/ for $295 but unfortunately they had none in stock and I could not wait a few weeks for one to arrive. They had new 100 AMP marelli's for $260 but again nothing in stock. The guy at rover connection did say he had a high output 120amp aftermarket alternator AMR4247 alternator for $270 but that he would prefer the Marelli over aftermarket so I headed this final bit of advice and made my decision to spend a bit more for the perception of piece of mind. Its too bad there was not more time or this knowledge a week prior for I could have saved a few tanks of gas - maybe even two!

In the end it was the immediate need for an alternator, fast inexpensive shipping and the fear being stuck in the middle of nowhere from a worthless reman or aftermarket product that cemented my decsion to pay a bit more for an alternator. I think the price was fair based on my research (maybe I am paying a bit of a premium for waiting to make a decision until the very last second ) and I hope I don't have to revisit the need for an alternator for years to come. Time will tell. Maybe I will have the old one rebuilt as a spare for the expeditions..

I really appreaciate all the opinons and advice. Thank You. Thanks Paul Grant for the tip on the local rebuilder in CT - its only a matter of time before I become a happy customer of yours...

So autopartsfair http://autopartsfair.com/ has the worst customer service ever. I do not reccomend placing an order with them for anything if good customer service is something you appreciate or expect. I'd prefer speaking to someone from India or one of the other outsourcing countries.

I have come to the conclusion today, as the alternator was delivered, that Denso is manufacturing and selling the Marelli alternator. The box is stamped Denso as is the product id sticker on the alternator, while some other branding and engraved parts on the alternator read Marelli.

This bothers me for one reason. Atlantic British sells Denso Alternators brand new for less and I would bet that when you take it out of the box in reads Marelli on it as well.

Does anyone know if my theory of Denso making Marelli alternators is true?

Stay away from http://autopartsfair.com/ - they have horrendous customer service!

denso is a highly respected japanese auto supplier which makes the OEM condenser fans for the disco as well as tons of stuff for toyota . so they should be a legit quality product. not sure but maybe they bought out Marelli?

DENSO Renames Manufacturing Subsidiary in Italy
Date: 8/2/2001

DETROIT, Mich. - DENSO International America’s parent company, DENSO Corporation, today announced that it has changed the name of its newly acquired subsidiary, Magneti Marelli Climatizzazione S.p.A. in Poirino, Italy, to DENSO Thermal Systems S.p.A. (DNTS). Acquired by DENSO on March 31, 2001, the company formerly was the thermal systems unit of Magneti Marelli S.p.A., an Italian automotive component supplier.

“The new name finalizes DENSO’s acquisition in the European marketplace,” said Koichi Fukaya, managing director, DENSO Corporation Thermal Systems Group. “At DNTS, we will continue to create and manufacture premier air conditioning systems for our European customers.”

Fukaya said DNTS will continue to be a European leader in the development and manufacturing of air conditioners and radiators, with production facilities in Italy, Poland, Portugal, Argentina, Brazil and India. In Europe, DNTS sells products to leading car manufacturers including Fiat, Peugeot and Renault.

By December 31, 2001, DENSO will rename two other newly acquired Magneti Marelli companies:
