Down by the big rock
Greg,

With all of that rain they're getting now, I bet that place is one huge mud hole. There is no way in hell I would even try Daniel now. If you go, please take pics!

Greg, Thaks for mentioning it. As with all efforts nothing works perfect. I put a calculator on the web site to help figure prices, and the MSN link for down loading the viewer isn't working, sorry.

All else is still the same. So far, we are expecting 30 Land Rovers.

We hope you will join us!

URE Uwharrie Rover Experience 22-24 October, 2004

Now for some information about the first annual Uwharrie Rover Expedition, URE. This event will be held in the Uwharrie National Forest in Central North Carolina from 22-24 October, 2004. We certainly hope that you find the information below that you need, and that you have an opportunity to join us!

What can you expect?

Led Trail Rides in the Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) area of the Uwharrie National Forest. Three levels of trail ride will be offered.

? Morrow Mountain Monster--All of the trails, easiest, more difficult, and difficult will be driven at one attempt. Wannabes must sit this one out, the guide is authorized to set the pace and leave you there if you can't keep up.
? Icabod Crane--easiest and more difficult (moderate) trails will be driven at this effort. While we are not sure you will lose your head, it could still happen.
? Great Pumpkin--An introduction to off-road driving. Only the easiest trails will be driven, but there is always the potential for damage.

Hayrides will also be a part of this event. Friday night's ride will bring back memories of a golden age being towed down a gravel road by a vintage land rover. Saturday night's just might leave you with a struggling heart and wet pants, not for the faint of heart.

Supper, only the finest fried chicken provided by Hardee's, will be held on Saturday night with all the fixin's. Don't miss it; I can already hear arteries hardening. If you require heart healthy vegetarian fare, bring it with you. We are out to cause heart attacks!

Throughout Saturday evening of the URE, at supper, and during the auction, tickets earned by registering early, participating in the led trail rides, pre-paying for supper can be redeemed. Following no rhyme nor reason, the event hosts will simply draw a raffle ticket and call out a winner. Will you be one?

On Sunday morning, we will give out prizes for Best Halloween themed Camp Site, Most Rover Looking Rover, Best Hard Luck Story, and Longest Distance Drive, as well as any reason we can think of to give away left over goodies.

The fees for the URE are being kept as low as possible.
The only mandatory fee is the registration fee, $25.00. What the Registration fee* includes is:
? Campsite fee for the Group Camp for two nights for one car (between $3-5 dollars averaged per car per night depending on attendance)
? Two days of access fees for the OHV area where the trails are, you decide which two days to use. (Access fees are $5.00 per day. If you drive on a third day, you must pay that fee individually.)

The fee for Saturday night supper is $5.00 per person (still waiting for confirmation) You can expect this meal to be a chicken dinner with 2 pieces of chicken, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, baked beans, peach cobbler, and sweet tea.

The event tee shirt is expected to cost $15.00 each. Anticipate being able to order this at on line registration as well as at the event. (the design should be available soon)

Club Membership will be discounted $5.00 during the pre-registration period and the event.

Early Registration will open July 1st, 2004 and continue until October 9th, 2004. Early registration will be rewarded by receiving 4 extra raffle tickets. These tickets can be redeemed at Saturday night's festivities.

In keeping with supporting America's military, this event is discounted from $25.00 to a cost of $10.00 for Active Duty and Reserve members of our Armed Forces.

Consider this a family friendly event.
We hope you can come and join us!
All of the details can be found at the link below!

Thanks!

Dan

*The registration fee will not be adjusted to support individual requirements.

Hey thanks Dan for the e-mail ref URE. A question for all of you that have has attended this in the past, My vehicle is bone stock and what would any of you in Dweb recommend I do to maybe be prepared for URE. I am not talking about going out and getting a lift, lockers and a winch. I mean what kind of recovery items such as tow straps, tools, etc.
This sounds like it is a fun excursion so any input would be great.

Dean,

Beyond the basic recovery gear items, there isn't a much that you would need to do to get ready. Stock vehicles have done the worst trails at Uwharrie undamaged many times. But those drivers were very experienced, or they were with someone who sheparded them through the most difficult spots.

Like all off road driving, pay attention to your own skill level and your risk comfort level. We will be offering three levels of trail ride, the maps for all of the routes are on the Old North State's web site. The only things I would suggest is to remove air dams if scrapping dirt bothers you, and if you have side steps I would take them off. Taking them off would make the moderate trails more comfortable as that would increase your Ramp/Breakover angle. If you are fairly well skilled, you could leave them on and take your chances.

The greatest dangers at Uwharrie are the rain and camp ground testosteron poisoning. If it rains, the easiest trails can become nearly impassable for all but the best equipped vehicle and most skilled driver. And any attempt to drive them turns in to a toboggan run, with a 4500 pound aluminum toboggan heading for the trees at the bottom turn that is too slick to make. Driving Uwharrie wet requires a risk tolerance of HIGH. Most of the time we can see that one coming though.

The other danger is much more insidious. Some wild eyed character wandering the camp ground starts to explain how every body but him is a mall crawler and if they were real land rover drivers they would just "git out on the trail." Manhood in question they follow this demon in to the woods were eventually they slide into a tree, settle on to a boulder or just break something. In their misery they look to the man they followed for sympathy when he looks at them and says, "You're out here in the middle of the woods driving a $36,000 car, what did you think would happen. If you cared about dents, you shouldn't have brought it out here. Damn, yuppies."

The link is a checklist which might help you determine what to bring.

Hope you can make it!

Personally can't wait for this event. As mentioned above rain makes all the difference with Uwharrie. dry it is fun and makes you seem like superman behind the wheel. Wet and hold on to your hats. This stuff is so slick you can't walk on it, it is very similar to ice.

Greg, I just heard from PJ yesterday, she has been handling the memberships. It is sad to say that she has spent most of her free time this summer helping her sister struggle with quite an illnes.

The other part of the reason is that even if everything were working just fine, she would not have known to send you your membership card. She normally waits for the check to come in to send it,and as your membership is free, thank you for your service to our country, she didn't know to send one. I forgot to forward the email.

As things seem to come in threes, she is also out of the memberdhip cards and I have neglected to print and send her more. There are also club shirts waiting mailing and checks waiting for deposit. I am sure you have heard this before, as have a couple of you, please bear with us.

Thanks,

Dan

Thanks, Dan..

If it will be easier, I can just pick everything up at URE (if I can get my rig in shape by then)

Really looking forward to it, as it has been 2 years since I have been able to attend an event due to my military duty.

Now that I am a civillian again (as of 3 weeks ago...Yippee!) I will be attending everything I can!

See you there!

Old North State uses delphi forums to host it's message board. Which is currently down, and they are unsure when it will be back on line. Please contact me directly, or post any questions you have here for the URE! Thanks guys, Dan

Hello: Latest update.
I will be doing a trail scouting trip this coming Saturday. I'll fill you all in once that is complete.

I am working on the catering. If you have not registered, don't assume I know you will want supper, please register!

The same goes for event T-shirts. I will not order more than a couple additional in each size for these shirts. If you want one please register.

Club stickers are in, I will have them for you at URE!

If we owe you a membership card and sticker they will be at the registration tent. If you are not going to be able to make it, let us know and we will mail them to you.

Thanks!
