I am looking at my D1 switches and I want to pull the covers off but I can't figure it out. I know how to open them up to clean the contacts but I have not been successful at pulling the covers off. The reason I want to do this is to see if I can figure a way to custom label a switch and retain the indicator lamp feature. has anyone seen or made a modified switch cover to display locking diffs or otherwise differentiate between real cruise and cruise switch powering an accessory, for example?

Also, I have two rear fog switches but neither latch like like the front fog or cruise. Why are they momentary? I haven't gotten my rear fogs working yet, and its probably a module which might explain it and also means when the car starts again the fogs will have to be switched back on if you want them on. I believe that means the stock latching switches for accessories would be rear wipers, cruise, and front fogs. Also, can't any switch can be made into a latcher? If so, the rear defrost and rear fog can work for accessories and have the indicator bulbs. Can these momentary switches be modified to latch without sacrificing another latching switch, essentially swapping the cap? I don't know if latchers are easier to get than the ebay availability and price is why I ask. So there's four latching switch covers available what are the ways they can be modified to differentiate their functions? Also, can someone tell me if mounting a compressor and locker on the stock DI lower dash button location is a bad idea since I think they are easier to switch than the ARB ones. I know I can mount my arb switches there too but the stock is appealing and I already have everything to do it. Right now they are under my window controls but I would like to try them up front since I think I look down to see them when I'm switching. I figure since they both have to be depressed there's a slim chance that would happen accidentally but maybe someone can tell me otherwise.

Good luck cleaning contacts on Land Rover switches.
I gave up after multiple tries for RRC window switches and ordered new replacements.

I’ve done it, it’s a pain and window switches are more annoying than the dash I think. I appreciate the fact if the switch dried out and corroded I can make it work again. But to make a custom label that lights up and looks virtually stock, I’m clearly in need of a bit more than luck!

Oh the cleaning of a switch does wonders, right away. But they seem to stop working sooner and sooner after every intervention.

IF you are going to clean the contacts inside I highly suggest buying this De OX cleaner commonly used to clean Nintendo game copper contacts. I've cleaned many or all my switches at one point or another. Some like the windows I gave up on as I could get new ones sub 10$. PM is right, I've cleaned those window switches several times until I got new ones.. HVAC fan control, don't even get me started on that one... Anyhow, check this stuff out.

I have deoxit. I've used it on my van. If they're really bad I manually clean the connections too. The most thorough process I've tried is to scrub as much grease off with superclean then treat with phosphoric acid to get it looking shiny, rinse and scrub then put de ox or synthetic grease on the connection. Recently I used a dremel wire wheel on a disco switch and put back together with synthetic grease. I thought the deoxit would make the metal more shiny, but it doesnt really do that. I've wondered if my idea of the phosphoric acid might be risky but I don't know why. It was a liquid concentrate, not naval jelly (or cokacola) and I rinsed it well. I don't think Ill clean a window switch again, but I also hope the tratments I've done to my switches will last, mine are at least 25 yrs old and have worked, or worked better after, so far. I will find out.

I dropped a can an broke the nozzle so I might try the spray bottle and/or the drip for more precision.

fog lights are momentary for 96-99, latching for 94-95

they use different MFU's
I have a spare MFU supposedly off a 97 and a 98 I’m going to take the MFU, both untested. I need to research the “right way” to get in behind the fuse box. It looks like I might need to unhook a bunch more to get to the mfu. I’ll take any pointers and it sounds like model yr MFu s are interchangeable. Are there features to look out for? Are the mfus easily programmable? I have rear fogs, rear wipers out at least. Any good pointers for Disco MFU school?

I think I exclaimed “MFU” when I went looking for it behind my fuse box! Or maybe something that sounded like that.

thanks

I don't think theres any programming for it, at least not easily inteded for a repair shops

they are only interchangeable for 94-95 and 96-99.
