My friend has a 98 Rodeo, dealer says a tooth broke off the ring gear and wants $2300 to replace it. Sounds like a typically insane dealer quote to me. Unless the Isuzu stuff is really wierd I cannot see it costing more than a few hundred for a ring/pinion, some bearings/seals/gaskets, and maybe a used diff if his is munched. I'm thinking we could even get an entire rear axle from the boneyard for a lot less that $2300.

I've done Land Rover diffs, D60s, and D40s. Anyone done an Isuzu diff? Is there anything wierd about them that would be either expensive or a PITA? I'm off to search for some Isuzu boards to ask on, but since I frequent here I thought I'd ask to see if anyone has some experience with them.

I do believe that the rodeo uses a standard dana 44 for the rear axle. These are common and parts can be had for a reasonable price (2300 is far from reasonable).

Now, I know Izuzu likes to fuck with their shit to make it REALLY odd ball. The Troopers have some crazy shit in the rear axle that make it extremely rare with no aftermarket parts. That is what happened to my buddies trooper. It took 3 months of hard searching to even find some used OEM crap.

With this in mind, hell, anything could happen in the rodeo. It could also have the same issues.

If just one tooth broke off, fish it out and fuck it. More than one tooth is engaged when transferring power from the pinion to the ring gear. Make sure the loose tooth isn't still in there, it could possibly jam between the pinion and ring...causing all sorts of problems. Sure, by leaving one tooth out you are putting more stress on the other teeth. But basically the ring and pinion are trash anyway so what does it matter if it gets even more screwed up?
