Apparently, Buying a Car is Difficult...

I called up a VW dealership in the nearby town to order a GTI. Fuck it. That's a decent all-rounder, right?

Gave them the specification, which was just an S model with the window deflectors, the color, everything... I also gave them the numbers, which weren't annoying. Just tell me how much I need to bring down to get a certain payment. I'm about to clear out storage that's costing me $400 a month anyway. Figured I wouldn't mind $250 or so.

I also faxed the financial information they wanted, and the numbers to check; to show it's not an issue for me and expedite the process.

Well, the day went on and no call. So, I stopped by, and wandered around the lot to only be greeted by a service tech out having a smoke. He was nice.

So, I called again today, and the guy said they've been busy in the showroom, so it'll be Thursday before they can do something that will take five minutes. Fuck you. I'm calling up and trying to give you money. You can see I could write a check for the damned thing already, but I'm going to finance, which is great for the dealership and you'll get a bonus for scoring financing (at that dealer, at least). So, some tire kickers are more important than someone telling you right now he wants to place an order...

Whatever.

I called another dealership; this time a very large one in a bigger city. Sales picked up after the phone tree, and I said I wanted to order a GTI; a 2020 model, which is the last one before the update I don't like. He said they don't have them in stock yet...

Then, I reminded him again that I wanted to ORDER one. Of course, he then said he'd have to see when they would be in. I told him I didn't care what they were going to get in. All I wanted was what I intended to "get in". He then paused for a while, and asked "Do you want a specific trim or something?".

So, I said "Fuck you you ignorant, lazy cunt." and hung up. The dude had the gall to call me back and say we seemed to have been disconnected.

What the fuck. Don't people want to sell a car anymore?

Here's your task if I call and say I want to order something: Shut the fuck up, do only and exclusively what I instruct you to do, run the numbers, and then get out of my hair. Your job as a car salesman is brand ambassador, "get shit bitch", and middleman. It boils right down to doing what people say. That's your job.

If I don't need your help deciding on a car, you do what I say, then you go to the mythical finance guy that nearly doesn't exist and do what he says. Then, I never see you again and you get a few hundred bucks out of the affair. The end.

Know your job, people. Understand the truth of your position and value to a company and do your job like you actually care.

If you manage to make that happen, you'll climb the ladder. It's the little shit that counts, in that regard. These people will forever be driving home in their 2002 Camry because they can't be bothered to do something as simple as follow an instruction and take a zero-effort check. I'm going to become bored with the GTI before I ever get one, apparently.

It's this area, in the end. Everywhere you turn here, someone's being lazy, lying, failing miserably at a task, or otherwise an additional inconvenience.

I don't understand it.

It's worse when it comes to buildings. My word I've been through the ringer trying to find a good spot for something, and I may well have, but not before some pretty intense stupidity. Now, before you think I'm unreasonable, have a look at something that should not exist:

wrongplan maybe.JPG

My comments are in magenta. What you're seeing is the totality of the information I received on a commercial space I was considering. That's it. There was no more information. This is the full size of the file, with all the information; and that means when I received it, the door graphic was cut off on the bottom and the lines uneven in length on the left. Obviously the numbers are off, as well.

You can see this appears to have been done in a vector editor, given the clean snaps and squeezing to make things fit. Nothing wrong with that; I use them all the time, but how do you making something come out of vectors looking like it was drawn in Microsoft Paint?

He had two weeks to get this to me. It's not a million dollar unit, but it's not cheap, either.

Then came the lies. He didn't know who owned the building. His boss didn't know who maintained it, but told me they owned it. Five minutes later in the conversation I threw him for a loop, and he said they didn't own it, and it was maintained by the owner of a Toyota dealership. Then, it was operated by a management company, and owned by someone nobody knew...

That's all at one meeting, with the owner of the entire operation and the agent right in front of me. Now, these two idiots are responsible for several hundred million dollars of property, and they can't even keep a file together on a shopping center.

This is not a unique experience. I've actually received less information from others. Nobody; not a single entity gave me even the amount of information I would have given them for a used crack pipe on Ebay.

Now, this shit happens. That's the world; but what drives me batty is how sometimes an entire town ends up hosting nothing but idio...

Wait a minute... I live here, too... :ROFLMAO:

I wonder if there is less commission on an order. I would think it would be same, and easy money.

At the first dealership it's the same. I'm not sure about the other, but I'd suspect it's no different. Doesn't really matter even if it is.

I refuse to deal with people who can't follow simple instructions, and I report them. If someone does a good job, I report that, as well. They deserve praise.

Fuck up that bad, though... I'll be speaking to the boss-man about the car I'm not buying from them, and pointing to the car in the lot that I bought elsewhere. I want these people out of the workforce so better people can have their jobs. I have no sympathy for the plight of man. They can eat ramen noodles and suck-start revolvers for all I care. Won't keep me up at night.

They're not being paid to think; they're being paid to follow orders and occasionally tie a balloon on a fucking windshield wiper, and they can't even get that right.

I grow weary of laziness and ignorance, and now I make a point to weed it out.

The year in the thread is a little iffy. For a while there, the 2020 was the last model, but now it's 2019. They know I'm after the last year of this generation. I don't know what we're going to get so far as the ninth generation golf is concerned, but despite it's obviously more sophisticated aesthetic, I'm not a fan.

I'm sure it's going to be an objectively better car, but I can't stand push-button start, something that basic shouldn't have infotainment-based climate controls, and I certainly don't want to be on the DII end of the stick again when it comes to mods and parts over time. :ROFLMAO:

The new one is cool, but for me it's kind of missing the point. People say they love those automatics, but... I can't bring myself to do it on this. I just feel like every day I'd wish it was a manual; versus buying the manual and wishing I had an auto only at rush hour.

Volkswagen doesn't seem too interested in keeping the Golf around here and, from what I understand, we may only get the GTI. That's not a good sign for availability in the future when similar vehicles are dropping like flies on our shores. Hell, they already have to make these in Mexico to hit the price point, and I'm not sure what they plan to do with that new model; because it looks quite a bit more expensive to build.

The current generation is five years old, but I think it was just a refresh; so it's been around long enough to have staying power in the aftermarket.

The only thing that annoys me so far as configuration goes is the same thing on every vehicle: Navigation requires the top model.

This must come down to whether or not they drill a hole on the roof, or something, because it doesn't make sense to run that up the trim ladder otherwise. If it was an option on lower models, I think most people would buy it. Seems stupid to have a TV in the dash for no purpose whatsoever, when it could be displaying a map, instead.

Oh, well. I prefer things that way to encourage companies like Garmin, but I'd just as soon not have the screen if it's not going to have a map.

Right now, I'm at the "just buy a damned car and be done with it" phase. I've got to have something here while I focus on the Rover, and the other stuff has to go. This seems like the closest I can get to my Infiniti nowadays; which is a comfortable vehicle that sneaks this in your head every time a corner shows up at 3am:

Most people are fucking stupid and go through life with a pre-prescribed script for almost everything they do. If you deviate whatsoever from that script they have no clue how to react.

Don't alot alot of these things feed off the other?

Most jobs suck, and are only done for the cash.

You only really give a shit to the point you keep getting paid.

MINIs are still offered in manuals (in limited numbers), and are also fun, sporty, smaller cars with interesting design and personality. My wife picked one up and it's been a blast to drive.

With that attitude, they'll never advance. They are at the pinnacle of their achievements in life already.

I was a car salesman; I know what it's like, and I did my job with pride.

They're getting paid ten bucks an hour at that dealership plus a bonus every time a yuppie buys a car. It's not difficult.

He still hasn't contacted me... Not even a spam e-mail. I don't think I'll be answering the call, at this point.

I'll try another dealership. I didn't expect much out of the second one, and I got pretty much what I expected; so, that wasn't a huge surprise. I did expect that a local dealership would be happy to call me back in a reasonable amount of time, though.

It may seem crazy to cut them off after only two days, but if sales can't get right back to you when you're trying to give the dealer money, imagine what it's like when you need something done under warranty. If they let that loser sell cars... I don't want to know who they let fix them.

I really like the way they look, and they're impressive, but I kind of feel like I'm sitting on a bucket in a bath tub when driving one.

I want to like them; I really do, but I can't get past that feeling. It kind of reminds me of an old Beetle or even a Porsche, in that regard. I should like it, and I want to like it, but it's just not for me. All three give me the same impression, for some reason. Maybe it's because I'm short. I know most of the people I've seen driving them are taller than me.

Edit: After looking at the site again, I'm not sure I'd ever be able to decide which Mini to get. The Countryman, which I believe that is, is my favorite from an appearance perspective. I actually like the one you pictured, but there are no dealerships anywhere near me, and I'd need to spend more time looking at them than I can muster now.

It'll be a little while before I can stay out that long. I'm not quite there yet.

Cheers,

I went to buy a '77 Alfa Romeo. The moron sales guy wouldn't let me test drive it. so I got a '77 Lancia Scorpion.

About 2 weeks later I took my sister to the Alfa dealer. Another sales guy walks over. I could see the moron sales guy in the corner.
I loudly asked if we'd be allowed to test drive it. The sales guy asks why? I replied loudly I was going to buy a new Alfa and the guy over there (I pointed at him) said I couldn't test drive it. So I got this the next day and pointed to the Lancia. Dude slithered out the side door...I laughed my ass off.

That would have been a tough choice, otherwise. They're both gorgeous, fun, and nuts at the same time. :)

I'll never grow out of crazy, but I've certainly reached a point where I need something a little more reasonable for everyday duty. I'll get better, but I'm tired of waiting around as the decent stuff falls away. I'd wait, but I don't want the replacement. It's cool, but it would bug me. I'm on the razor's edge of being able to order a current model, so time's wasting.

Side note: I still haven't heard back from the guy. It's now 5:02 PM; nearly three days later, at this point. I did try to call in, but I suppose they're still to busy to sell me a car...

It's amazing how many time's I've experienced the "Do you understand??? I'm trying to give you money!" situation. Like others here, I usually find some way around the morons.

There might not be a way around it, at this point. I might not get a GTI.

That fucker just pushed me beyond the order period... I was in a rush for a reason, damn it. I called another dealer just now and they were polite, as well as informative...

But I'm on the other side of the razor, now. I'm going to give them a fair shot with what's on the lot, as they sent me the links, but it's all upper-tier models with leather and push-button start. I like black leather, but I didn't want it without cooling features which aren't offered, and I really dig the plaid. It's great in both the summer and winter.

They're aggressive as hell with the pricing, but five grand isn't always worth a decade of something you didn't really want. Every time I start it I'd be cursing that button, I'd be leaving the stupid key thing in it and killing the battery, forgetting what to press...

To be fair, the price is damned good, but I don't know if I want to go that route. May as well ring up the top model, at that point. It's triple-stupid to have a bigger TV in the dash and still not have navigation.

I could get one from DC, but that's a car on a lot with test drives under it's belt that I can't check out, and it's not the same buying experience as an order.

I don't think this is going to happen. I can't wait until fall for what may be the last of this generation to show up.

Nobody's entirely sure which model is the last; but even if it survives another year, I need it sooner than that if I'm going to buy one at all.

I did decide to call a dealer in DC who has one, but that's a little more complicated. They were much better on the phone, and swore up and down they'd get back to me tonight or tomorrow morning, as of course they need to run the numbers, and it's fairly late.

I've no idea what to expect, but we'll see. Their shots on the site still show it wrapped, so maybe it hasn't endured a pile of people pretending they know how to use a clutch. :ROFLMAO:

They've got it sitting on the lot, but it's going to come down to how fast I can move if it works for me. We'll see.

I walked in to a Honda dealer in jeans and a tee shirt to buy an Accord for my wife, cash money. They told me they couldn't honor the USAA deal that's guaranteed on their website (they have a special agreement for a no hassle price) and said it would be $1,700 more. I put my checkbook back in the pocket and walked out. Should have seen the look on their faces.

They got back with me, and the salesman did precisely what he was supposed to do. We'll see if the process continues so well, or if the ball is dropped again.
