I had a 4.0 in a '97 disco that went 170k with no major issues (had to replace the water pump). However, by about 165k it had developed a bottom end knock and some valvetrain noise. I am pretty certain the bottom end noise was an endplay issue, and the valve train noise, was likely due to the some cam lobes wearing. My wife drove that Rover and she really babied it, so between regular maintenance and her kind driving that 4.0 went a long ways. I had a spare motor and just didn't want to deal with putting it in, so I sold it with just over 170k on the clock. We owned it since it 76k on the odo and prior to that it had always been serviced at the dealer. So it had regular maintenance it's whole life. It never got hot and I think that is one thing that really extended it's life. It still ran pretty strong, even with the bottom end noise...
