Anyone been here? I read in the washington post a few weeks back about camping on the beach sounded like an easy close trip to make for those of us in northern va.

our local ROVERS group usually makes this trip every year. i don't enjoy going there during the peak season with the mass amounts of people. i'd opt for the late summer if you can hold out. the winds pick up and it can get a little interesting camping right off the beach though. you don't actually camp on the beach, but slightly behind it in designated spots.
it's a nice area, but when there are crowds any nice area becomes a nasty place in my mind.
if you want to drive on the beach you need to pay like $70 too for a yearly pass. not sure if they changed that, but that was the case last time i was there.

and drive slow (real slow) on the roads within the park. a few ponies get hit every year there due to morons from NJ thinking they are on the Garden State Parkway. and yes they are wild ponies, so don't expect to walk up to them. yes they can bite and yes they can kick.

right now i am assuming it it full up and trying to get a camping spot will not happen on a weekend. maybe try during the week if you really are set for July/August. otherwise i would opt for late summer.

there is a great place to get crabs before you enter the park on the right. adjacent to the gas station and little market. it is your last stop for anything before you cross the bridge and into the park.

Never stayed at the State Park but we stayed on the island and in Chincoteague. Always liked it and had a good time. When my son was little we usually went first week of September after the big kids were back in school.

When we went to Chincoteague we would get the ORV permit and drive out to the beach for almost total seclusion. Dependin on the season, only 10 vehicles at a time were allowed on VA side which usually meant about a mile between vehicles.

We also would stay bayside and take the scouts canoeing and backpacking in the spring.

Take lots of bug repellent!!!

Here's a good link for AINS:

Wild Ponies Bite and Kick.

Here is a picture from April 1986. The ponies were lured with a bag of potato chips.

If you're planning on going, post something up here... I know a bunch of us in NJ have talked about going down.. I think there is a car ferry at the bottom of NJ that will take us real close to the park also.

I'm impressed... how long did it take you to find that? It would take me hours to find my pictures.

They tore up some chips. We didn't share our beer with them.

I wouldn't tell them that their island will be underwater when Greenland melts. They'll go off biting and kicking people for sure.

Dude, I found a photo album I assembled in the mid 1980s. It took longer to scan, erase the goober, and resize. Hang on, I'll post more.

Remember before they closed all the trails in the GWNF? This is Riverton, WV in July 1986.

This thread is about Assateague not Seneca Rocks or the GWNF!

I was looking for the Wild Ponies Bite and Kick sign but I couldn't find it. I did find a pic of some of the deer that invaded our bayside campsite but I don't have a scanner... there was about eight of them and they would come right up to the table looking for food. Probably heard from the ponies that people had chips.

Here is a picture at Big Meadows in July 1986. I consumed 'Mountain Zombies' served in Mason jars at the lodge the night before. You and Larry rode up on your motorcycles.

Some of the signs simply said 'Wild Ponies Bite and Kick".

Kavic,

Tell them of the evils of sand and salt water on a vehicle. Isn't there certain recovery gear required for driving on the beach? The mosquitoes are notorious. They come out in May.
