i have a honda 04 rancher.....6k hard miles and not one issue. adjusted the valves, adjusted the clutch and have kept the oil changed. shit....forgot about the angle sensor that went out....but that was expected.

the can ams are nice looking. however, i saw i guy roll one and it was twisted all to hell. i thought the racks and armor tubing were pretty weak and that it should have held up better. hell, ive rolled mine several times without damage. then again, maybe it was the weight, the way he rolled or a combo.

the arctic cats are sweet ass (at least the one i rode).

cant go wrong with a honda though....

btw, what fucking moron pays 29500 for a damn 4-wheeler?

enjoy!

I don't get the big, slow, 4x4, ATV's. If you live on a farm, fine, it's a tool. But to have some fat ass beast for fun is a waste. Just buy a Jeep.

i assume you are talking about side by sides? if so, i agree.....buy a jeep! those things suck to drive or ride in on the trails around here. for 10k plus, a man could have just about any damn thing. yeah there cool looking but i wouldnt buy one....

All ATV's made today are tough and reliable I would at least get a 450CC or higher. You do not need a 4wd if you have a winch but that is up to you. With that good luck in your purchase.

i wouldnt have one without 4-wheel drive. at least for what/how i use mine. winching is a pita and an inconvenience. 2 wheel drives get stuck in mud damn easy. many manufacturers offer selectable 2wd and 4wd and this is an awesome feature. you can also buy an add-on shiter to take any dedicated 4wd atv into 2wd drive and back if you so desire.

it is also easier to flip a 2 wheel drive imho....

there are a shit load of places around here you simply cannot drive a land rover (even a jeep) due to rocks and trail narrowness. it is nice to have a 4-wheeler to explore these places. plus, it is nice to feel the wind in your face and taste the mud in your teeth.

last saturday.....

if you're looking for a toy, don't get a 4x4. you have a land rover to do your exploring in.

look at Honda's TRX line. The 700 will scare the shit out of you. 4x4 just isnt the way to go if you're looking to "play"

consider what you want to do with it. I agree with barefoot on the 4x4 thing, if you are wanting to do more serious trail rides, test capabilities, etc. To me, "toy" in the sense of the word I was referring to is a 2wd. Something fast, lightweight, and agile.

I own both, all are Hondas, and all have their ups and downs.

I have a kawasaki prarie 360 auto 4x4 that I bought new in 03. It's the perfect size for anything. I've taken it out in the wilds of Maine and since moving to a gated community I leave it at my parents so they can use it on the farm. It has a diff lock and engine brake. you should also look into artic cat. I know alot of people talk trash about them but we use to use them on the farm and we would really abuse them. They would take some serious abuse. the 400 would pull a cart loaded with 1000 lbs of corn silage everyday over the hill no problem.

don't count out Polaris either. i don't own one but have ridden both the 4x4's and the 2-wheel sport models. and like some one else said, go at least 450cc or higher. good luck

Here are a few pics of the ATV's the Army uses (Polaris Sportsman MV700) its pretty decent, it has dual warn winches and IR lights for night driving to name a few nice options.
