Cbass has one and he'll probably see this post later today and get back to you. I'll let him know you're asking.

On a side note, I have a a4 avant with the 1.8t motor. Love the car but it gets like 22 to 24 mpg. All s4 owners I've talked to get less mpg. Great cars, but not a easy gas sipping car. But still better than my d1 at it's 13-15mpg. They all take premuim gas too, so a tank is like $30 here in Utah. For my commute, if I drive the d1 over the audi I would save like $30 to $40 a month, but that's about it.

my d1 gets about 260 miles on a $50 tank of gas so anythings gotta be better than that. plus i will have to commute about 130 miles a day this summer and i'm not even sure my rover could handle it.

Almost made the same decision myself. There is a forum AUDIWORLD I think. Tons of info. My concern was that they were talking about 4k to 5k to repair cars with blown turbos. I also drove one (turbo 6) not that fast. May have just been the one I drove. Expensive to insure and repair. (Sound Familiar) I do like them still. Good Luck.

yeah i've been there and looked around. i was just wondering what some rover owners thought about them. the repair cost doesn't really bother me, i mean after all i do own a land rover. i'v got some friends that have turbocharged cars and they take good care of them and have gotten over 100k without problems so i figure its just how you treat the turbos

I don't have the S4, but I do have an A4 with the 1.8 turbo engine in it. I absolutely love it and don't really have that many complaints with it. If you don't do the work on it yourself you'll get raped from import car repair costs though (similar to a LR).

If you drive the 1.8t engine around the city, it gets about 21-22 mpg as has been said. However, that's because it's a turbocharged car. That means that the actual displacement of the engine goes up when the turbo is spooling because you are forcing more air into the cylinders. larger displacement = bad gas mileage generally. But when you drive on the freeway, the turbo hardly ever has to spool up so it's basically like driving a Geo Metro engine-wise with the 1.8L engine. I generally get about 310 miles to a 14 gallon tank. I went on a road trip once though that was fairly flat at freeway speed the whole time and I got about 460 miles to the tank. So when you don't use the turbo all that much, they get great gas mileage. As soon as the turbo kicks in, gas milieage goes down the hole.

The S4 is another story, don't buy an S4 for gas mileage, they're sports cars that are made to go fast, not get good mileage.

As for the turbo going out on you, it can happen, but it generally only happens if you chip-tune the car and make the turbo work harder than it was designed to. A turbo replacement is going to run you about $1300. I am at 110,000 miles right now on mine and haven't fixed anything besides general bearings and brakes and the guy that owned it before me didn't use the right kind of oil, so I had to replace the oil pump because the oil sludged up in the pump.

Cbass is right about the turbo and mileage. The a4 is my wifes, she drives it really quite hard, trust me being a passenger is a scary ride. When I drive it we average much better, but my wife tells me I drive like a old man. The same issue with the disco. We drove to moab from slc she drove down and made about 10mpg. I drove back and got 18mpg

avenues area, Just look for the white a-4 avant with a bike/ski rack going by in a blur :D

Actually have you ever heard of streamline industries? They specialize in Audi's only. They are very reasonable for how good they are for repair and maintence. They are on 21st S and 300w. They offered to flash our chip and put us to about 230 hp, just what my wife needs, more power

Have you thought about a Jaguar x-type..they are practically giving them away...they have AWD,2.5 or 3.0L engine, 20-30mpg. I bought a 2003 with 11K for 20K, with a 6 year, 100,000 mile warranty, and they offer 2.9% financing on certified used cars. Payments are only 340/month. they drive great, the 2003 and up have very few problems, the 2002 you want to avoid. you should go and driveone, Land Rover Asheville is also the Jag dealership. Nice Jag luxury with that Jag growl, they are great on the mountain roads and in snow...just a thought

well gas mileage isn't that big of an issue. if i can get over 20 mpg than thats fine with me. i''ve got a good mechanic that knows alot about imports and has always helped me out price wise in the past, plus a buddy of mine is a mechanic and loves working on his 1.8t vw so i'm sure he would do all the little stuff for free.
keep the info coming it's helping alot.
thanks

I have a 2001 Audi S4 and it is a great car. I get around 20-21 mgp ave. city/hwy with the 2.7 turbo V6. I am now considering whether to get an extended warranty to 100K (I am at 36K now and another year on warranty). My other option is to purchase one of the new V8 models which are awesome.

I also have a 2003 VW GTi 20th Anniv. edition with the above mentioned 1.8t as my daily driver-I love it. About 25-28 mpg ave. depending on traffic.

I may be getting a job that would include a commute and I am really kicking around the idea of the new golf with the 2.0l turbo. That looks like it would be a fun little car.

I may be picking up an A4 beater on Monday. It has 144K on the clock and some rear end noise. I can get it super cheap and it could be a fun project car. Maybe a 2" lift and some BFG AT's. :)

We bought at 05 Jetta TDI a few months ago to help our gas bill. Jennifer drives about 150 miles/day and the disco was killing us. The TDI gets 55 plus mpg and we love it.
