A generic scan tool will read the OBD codes from the V8 engine, but thats it.....to read ABS, BCU, Autobox, Airbags, ACE and Security systems you will need a Land Rover based tool.

X2 on that, the basic readers have limited access to the important stuff, which is why they are generically known as 'readers'.

What they are good for is checking up on O2 sensors, live data and the like, but if you want to get into the sticky bits, Hawkeye, Nanocom etc are the way to go.

We bought a Hawkeye a couple of weeks ago, great tool but not cheap.

I've heard they are coming out with version 6 code pretty soon. I wonder if D2 will get any updates. I like mine a lot, but I think the nanocom is superior in many ways. They main reason I haven't sold the hawkeye is because I'm thinking about getting an LR3/D3 at some point, if I sell my D2 and Acura, and it can be unlocked for that... the nanocom doesn't support LR3 yet (if ever).
