Gear Selector Illumination Panel Replacement

My gear selector illumination panrl has broken and I can't get the gear selector off. I have the full workshop manual but it only refers to removing a stick shift selector which just unscrews. How about the automatic version? Can anybody help me? Please

You pull it off. I have to do that occassionally to release the solenoid. Pulling it off takes lots of effort and you have to be at just the right angle. The only way I can do it is to sit backwards on the passenger seat (with my back to the windsheild), and use both hands to pull as hard as I can. Once it is off, you can just lift up that plastic piece. There aren't any screws.

Good Luck, Jamie

It's a 95. The bulbs are fine. It's the material the gear selector fits in that's torn. I found a replacement at British Atlantic for $112

Thanks Rover Puppy - I'll try that. I pulled it a bit but didn't want to do it hard in case of damaging it. You said there were no screws. I see four screws holding the panel in place?

No screws on my 02. There are 4 little posts that hold the panel into place. I remove it by gently lifting equally on all 4 posts until it is free. If you need to take it off completely to repair or replace it, there is an electrical plug you can disconnect after it is opened up.

Getting it back together is another challenge. On mine, the 4 posts on the underside of the panel have to be aligned with the slots they fit into before the panel can be pushed back down all the way into the "self locking" slots. The cover also has kind of a tail section (I have no clue what it's called) that has to be tucked under the open area (back by the parking brake) before attempting to line up the clips and slots. For me, it's easier to reassemble when the gear selector is in neutral (just press the round solenoid thingy and you can move the gear selector while everything is opened up).

The first few times I needed to open up the area, I removed the cupholders for better visibility and a bit more manuevering room. Now I just do it "by feel" since my solenoid never locks up in a convenient place or time. I do understand your hesitancy to pull hard because it does take so much effort that you feel like you're going to break it. Just be ready to catch yourself from smacking into the windsheild when it does finally pull loose. That's the reason I sit facing backwards on the passenger seat to remove it.

Here is a pic that illustrates that location of the posts and the tail section on the underside of the gear selector cover. Hope that helps :)

Good Luck, Jamie

Jamie...thanks again for the help. Mine is a 95 so I don't know if it's different?? Does your gear selector have a button on the side you have to press in to change gear? I have tried to pull it off but to no avail. There has to be a trick to this.

If I'm reading your question right, you're just trying to remove the gear selector knob. There is a rectangular panel on the top of the knob you have to pry off with a screwdriver or something similar. Once it's off, there will be some clips and a nut inside you will have to take off and the knob will slide off. Thats how I did it on my 96 anyway.

Thanks

007 - thank you. I finally broke down and called the garage and they told me how to do it. Good news is the film is replaceable without the whole panel - only $40 from A.British
