When the cats go bad or get clogged do they always throw a code on an OBDII truck?

Just trying to figure out an issue with the D1. Thanks in advance.

I've got terribly rattling cats on my '96 DI and I don't have any check engine lights on.

I do however, have the new ones sitting in the box waiting to go on....

I'd swap the O2 sensors around first.

i get sorta weird noises from there sometimes.

only when its cold tho, & you know how damn cold it's been here lately.

i just bought 2 new O2's & i am having doubts about putting them in cause of the cats. but i bet i'm just being paranoid.

How loud can the tick get? I've got what I would call a knock or bang coming from one of mine, much more than a tick. I crawled underneath with a stethoscope and the cat is definitely where the noise is coming from.

If they poop on the floor and pee in the bed your cats are bad.

I was wondering why i had gear oil and power steering fluid stains on my sheets....

Seriously though, i have a tick but my biggest issue is bad performance. I cant tell if its the wonderfull winter gas mix or something else.

What issue are you trying to resolve?

I have lots....

For the D1 though its horrible gas mileage and she feels weak in the power department.

Again, this is the first winter up north. I have heard lots about the "winterized" gas or what ever so i didnt know if that was it or something else. It ticks a bit too, no rattle yet though.

Horrible gas mileage and weak power are the norm for a Rover. The truck weighs like 4500lbs and the engine only produces 180 odd horses.

Im well aware of that, this isnt my first rodeo but thanks anyways for stating the obvious to those here who may not have been aware of that fact.

Normal gas mileage for my D1 has been 16 - 18 combined for the past 2.5 years i have had it. Moved from NC to Maine this year and now this winter its acting worse than usual.

Now its getting 8-10 combined and wheezes up hills.

Which is why I started looking at causes for the decline.

Thanks...

No they don't. My mom had a Jeep (now has a Range Rover:cool: ) and that had clogged cats at around 30K miles. It didn't set the check engine light, but it could barely accelerate above 40 mph

Two winters with my D1 and both brought out lousy mileage and broken parts. Throughout the warmer months it was a different truck, great mileage and no failures except rear-view mirror shit the bed. One of the best cold weather suggestions I've used is to use synthetics in engine, tranny, t-case and axles, doesn't stiffen up in the cold, no warm-up to get truck rolling. It gets very cold here, lows in the single digits when no cloud cover.

Besides your cats I'd say fuel injection. Maybe an injector cleaning might help. I had one fail and one on it's last legs. Wish I had cleaned em more often.....replaced em with less used and mileage is creeping up to pretty decent again. Just a thought, not a recommendation.....last summer I was just shy of 18 on the highway. Never saw a problem coming.
