Bad Knock

98 Tdi DISCOVERY. Sounds like its running on 3 out of 4 cylinders - Loud knock that you can feel through clutch. Do they have a solid flywheel like the defender? I wondered if it had a break in the crank or if it had a multi-part flywheel whether something had come adrift?

Cheers

a lot of times that's a broken flex plate.

post in the disco tech section and you'll get more view, but few have tdi's.

i saw a 300tdi eat two different flex plates in short order and it sounds horrible.
like there are marbles in the motor.

The first thing we always do is a compression test, through the glow plug, should be about 650 psi, they are a 19.5 -1 engine. Then go from there. Takes 15-20 minutes. Then leak down test if needed. That isolates engine and a lot easier than dropping tranny. It will not hurt because you are not running engine. If compression is fine. Drop oil pan, check bearings and back main journal, they sometimes break there. 300TDI uses a liquid gasket for oil pan rather than cork. Another simple check, then drop tranny.

where are you all getting flex plates from? are you getting new ones or old ones off a pulled trans.?
