bad stepper motor=no start?

Ok so it seems from other peoples opinion that the issues I have been having is due to a bad stepper motor. Bad idle, not wanting to take throttle response until its warm, etc.

Today she decided to not start on me, I had her idling and she just stopped running. Tried to start her, she would catch and flounder around occasionally taking throttle input and then die.

I waited for about a half hour and she fired up just fine.

went and changed the oil and spark plugs, she fired up just fine and idled smooth. I shut her down to clean up and when I started her again, no dice. I am sitting in the parking lot right now waiting to see if she will fire up again.

No cel, missfiring noise occasionally when she was acting up, similar to a pop out of the intake.

Crank position sensor?
What else could it be.
600 miles from home and no rave with me.

Thanks for any input.
Richard

the IAC/stepper motor won't cause this
I was finally able to get it to start and put it back in a bay. After reading a few posts with similar issues I pulled the stepper motor and cleaned it up. It was disgusting. Cleaned the inside of the throttle body as well and even switched over to my spare maf just for shits and giggles.

She started right up and after a bit of funny idle she calmed down and drove ok.

Still concerned about it so I may just order a cps and stepper/iacv.

Also could be the crank sensor ring on the fly wheel that has come loose. Pull the inspection plate on the trans. housing and have a look.

Items to check if you have not already. Your multi-plug that connects the coil-packs, sometimes come loose allowing a start but not stay running due to vibration. You will get misfires. Manifold Temp sensor, test it. Pull and clean your MAF with Electrical Parts cleaner (some folks shy from this because of the cost to replace that MAF). I have read where a misfire could short a spark-plug or two, so if she does get running, may want to replace plugs again. You have said nothing about your plug wires? Get her running and use some carb-cleaner to spray around vacum lines looking for an RPM bump. I will assume your are talking about the D1.

Sorry, i should have specified its the D1.

I am running Magnicore 8mm so it "shouldnt" be that. They are only 2 years old.

Right now its running fine-ish. Rough idle and stalls sometimes when i take it out of gear at lights and stops, but only rarely. It still idles rough and hopefully when i replace the IACV when the one i bought from Will it will fix it.

On a side not i found an idle air control valve from advance auto for $36 new. Not sure of the quality but for it being that cheap i may buy one to keep in my kit.

If that IACV does not do the trick, well at least you have some other items to consider. They are all right there at your fingertips, just waiting for your attention.
I love the system, hate the thought a single sensor can bring you to your knees.
I have come close several times to yank it all and install a Carb/Distributor.
