Did a search...didn't answer my question

98 Disco Auto
Runs good
Running 10w40 for this trip (normally 5w30)
All fluids just changed
New NGK plugs and wires

Heading to OBX (about 400miles trip)
Three hours in engine starts to loose power...I know its the VSS have had intemittent problems every 6 months or so
I push through the rest of the trip with frequent loss of power at varying speeds...I tried to keep it under 50mph which seemed to help

When I get to the beach there is a new noise from lower part of engine...more of a clacking noise which seems to go away with higher rpms. It is more of a mechanical noise like a chain drive. The following codes were thrown: random misfire, #5misfire, #7misfire, and excessive emissions. Replaced VSS and cleared codes running fine except for new noise.

My question...could I have cause problems by continuing to drive with the bad VSS

dude if your timing chain was that loose, it would jump teeth change the timing and cause mucho griefo( i am learning spanish).
Clanking noise, rattling noise? No oil light? better grab a long piece of metal or screw driver pretend its a stethescope, and start isolating some areas.
Not sayin it aint the timing chain, highly unlikely, that it could make that much noise and not break or jump.
