Barbed wire + D2 Axle... Goodbye TC, and other junk

Well, I ****ing knew this would happen sooner than later, with branches and other trail debris (but barbed wire?). My gauge cluster had a techno seizure. I guess some skid-bag dumped barbed wire on the snow covered trails. I pretty much stopped right away when I heard the noise, but a few seconds is all it takes. Abs cable and brake line, severed. cv boot thrashed. sidewall looks ok. not the first time i lost a brake line:ack:

Anyways, I don't know if D1's and RRC's have this issue, but D2 Axles have to much crap just floating around the tires (and everywhere underneath). Totally unprotected, waiting to get raped by nature (and barbed wire). Can't seem to find any threads talking about line and cable protection. and not just extended s/s brake lines and cable kits, thats even worse.

Has anyone converted the D2 front/rear with brake lines and ABS cables ran on the axle from the center out, like the older style LRs? Maybe run the tubbing and cable along a welded peice of flat bar on the top? Anyone sell some kinda retrofit kit out there? time to get creative?

Thanks

I think you're the first person reporting trail damage to D2 hardware.
I remember shortly after D2s came out, D1 people brought this up.

You can do what you outlined. Brake lines - get stainless-steel sleeved lines from EE. ABS sensor cables can be extended, rerouted, and protected as well.
CV boot - there's nothing you can do there.

I may be the first to report it, but i'm sure it happens often. over the years it's happen to me before and a few others in our group (non-rover). I think it's little crap like this that maks the D2 less "hardcore". these vulnerabilities make it as electronically delicate as a chevy escalade, or any other generic computer ridden suv.

yeah, I'lll carry out my retrofit, probably documenting it. just in case someone else wants to make their D2 at least, ALL terrain and have a better chance to surviving the rough . like the older rigs.

This is an old one, but anyone have this happen to their LR? serious, watch out for them trees  (and ****ing barbed wire).

I ripped apart an ABS line on a branch on the trail... hello three amigos and about 50 stored ABS faults.. The branch must have come close if not hitting the SS braided RTE brake lines too... and they had zero damage. I carry spare brake lines, but don't worry about the ABS as it's not required to get off the trail and drive home.

Glad your s/s line survived. Yeah, this totally made my 3-amigo's come up ,for the first time ever in fact. But they brought a few friends allong, named "service engine soon" and the big red (!) brake light...
