Well that is the last "business" in Niagara Falls.

Looks like the one by us here is getting the ax too.

Yeah, the Willow Grove "possible" closing will affect us. Our building(Motorola) borders the base(get to watch the airshow and practices) and I sometimes go flying with a friend out of Willow Grove(mostly T-34's 'til they were grounded).

I just hope they don't build a d*v*l*pment or W*l-M*rt there if the base closes! Although I'm not really sure how many local businesses are actually tied into the base for business. It'll probably hurt a little but shouldn't close anyone down.

Jason.

New London Submarine Base closing--> one less option for me. On the other hand, it looks like they are keeping the sub base at San Diego open...I was sure that one was going to get the axe.

It's highly unlikely that any bases on the BRAC list will actually close. The reason is that the whole list is accepted and the bases closed or none of them are. The first accepted BRAC list didn't close all the bases on it. Why? Because you (congress) used to be allowed to pick and choose from the approved list. It's not that way anymore. It's all or nothing these days. The list would have to be pretty short for congress to pass it.

I keep my fingers crossed for Miramar MCAS staying in business - the city would jump at the possibility of converting it to a new airport... My house's 3 miles from the end of the runway :)

I surveyed the Miramar base in January for future V-22 Operations. What a great base that is and I am looking forward to my next visit in June.

What is really frustrating about the bases closing is they say it will save the country 43 billion over hte course of 20 years. How much money they just apporove to send to Iraq? Wasnt' it 80+ billion??? Would much rather keep that money and reinvest it in our country.

Willow Grove employees about 7000 non military personnel I believe. That would be a pretty big hit to the local economy and I'm sure the developers will buy the land for cheap and put up a bunch of $600k+ homes on it or a Walmart. There isn't one for at least 3 or 4 miles of there. :)

Zak,

The initial financial outlook does not make sense if you compare $49B to the $80B you mentioned above. But if you look into the big picture, cutting 33 bases and 700 minor installations will bring a larger ROI during our next conflict.

#1 Our military is spread out in a fashion that was designed for the cold war era. Those days are over. We need to consolidate troop and equipment for faster deployment in the future.

#2 Don't forget that if a base is closed; those military personnel will be absorbed into another base and equipment will be distributed as required. The military is always fighting the Lib pols for money and often get denied. $49b in savings over time will greatly help the struggling services. The best years to be in the military was during the Reagan and Bush Sr. years. But times quickly went to shit during the clinton fiasco.

#3 Civilians. Every defense contractor knows that this type of work is sketchy at best. It's the nature of the business. If one signs on to this way of life must realize that moving, changing jobs, and contract talks are part of it. All of these people I see protesting, complaining, threatening to sue the Federal Government lost contact with reality long ago.

Lot of interesting US gov't agency movements going on these days: CIA Domestic Hdqts to Denver

I wonder how the military consolidations will progress. Away from the coasts to the inner part of the country? Other way around? It will be interesting to see what direction these facilities move within the country.
