Battery light on-no RPM or Fuel gauge

Hi all,

This is my first post and my first disco. So, I'm a little green but have loved learning about it!

Either way, I'll just start from the top. My 97 disco SE and I were heading back from fishing when I started to notice my fuel gauge was reading less and less fuel. Now I know this beast doesn't get great mileage but I shouldn't have been out of fuel that quickly. So I pulled into a gas station just to top it off so I could use mileage if the gauge was total gone. Filled up, gauge indicated empty and fuel light was one. Headed home and all was my new normal, then about 10 minutes from home I noticed my battery light was on and that my RPM gauge had gone dead. Figured the heat had screwed with something (since I live in AL and it's a million degrees outside). Optimistic, I know.... Regardless, let it sit all yesterday afternoo/night and drove it this morning, same thing. So my easy fix was null....has anyone else had similar issue so realize no way fm these are a all linked or if they're separate? I know those wires to the fuel gauge get old and warn over time and eventually fail, I just have no clue where to start given the light and RPMs not working. Any guidance is appreciated ! Thanks!!

The alternator provides the signal for the tachometer. That part can fail without affecting its charging ability. What voltage do you have at the battery when idling?

Yes, very likely to be alternator related. Could be the unit itself or could be something as simple as a bad ground connection. Check voltage as suggested above.

Alternator was totally shot. Was driving fine then everything failed. Pretty great timing as it happened during rush hour as I was heading to pick up the alternator. Whoop!

Sorry I've gone dark on any update since. Was in the middle of acquiring multimeter and doing more research. All roads led to the alternator. Replaced and running like a charm. All gauges (minus fuel...) are up and running.

Any suggestions on the fuel gauge or how to test if the wiring is shot?
