I have recently replaced a steering gearbox that was leaking excessively. I replaced it with one I purchased from Will Tillery a few years ago. I can’t remember if it was new or rebuilt but it is working quite well.

I receive emails from Rock Auto they send listing “wholesaler close outs” and in the most recent list was a BBB Industries remanufactured steering gearbox for a D1. There is a Defender guy that refurbishes them and his reputation is solid. I had planned to send him a spare so I had one ready to go. If you send your core to him, with shipping and his costs, you land around $450. However, the Rock Auto one from BBB Industries was so inexpensive ($165 and no core charge) I decided to roll the dice and ordered it. That is actually less than the core charge I have seen others charging.

I couldn’t find much negative about BBB Industries in a goodgle search aside from a Jeep guy who purchased one at NAPA and let’s just say it was a bad experience.

Anyone out there have any experience with BBB Industries and/or Napa boxes? It is also my understanding they supply other major chains, so any experience with rebuilt boxes with other chains may well be applicable.

FWIW, I checked BBB Industries stock and they have no D1 or Defender steering boxes available. That information and that I purchased it via a “Rock Auto Wholesaler Closeout” which shipped directly from BBB Industries suggests to me they don’t plan to sell them any longer.

Im not sure what to make if that.

Well all I know is I checked Rockauto to buy one myself and they were gone :( At that price point if it turns and doesn't leak I'd use it. Probably just a reman

this ones difficult. theres non avail so I bought 2 used ones this year with the intent to reseal. Both have hard parts gouged beyond a simple reseal, so they sit blown apart in a tupperware box while I keep topping off the existing steering system
