I sleep outside all the time. You made yourself sound like a hard ass because you said tents are for pussies.

Nah not a hard ass. I was being sarcastic. Just give all my buds shit and call them pussies for sleeping in a tent next to me. Tents are just one big pain in the ass IMO. Nothing funnier than being out all day and coming back up to camp and my friends $400 tentmahal shredded and 100 yards down wind from a storm. Meanwhile my cot and sleeping bag were stowed in the back of the truck out of the way.

As a total gear geek, sometimes setting up the tent is part of the enjoyment.

X2. My 10'x13' Wally World special takes less than 10 minutes to set up, and that's when I'm setting it up by myself. Set-up and take-down only suck in the rain.

A tent is essential in a lot of conditions. This is coming from a person who regularly sleeps in quonset huts and snow caves in the winter.

Trying to diminish the use of a tent is laughable. This guy has obviously never had the weather turn in a hurry.

Ben - I had a tent all along on the last trip, and yet absolutely enjoyed sleeping in the truck. It is a single-person solution with a D1, though.

Exactly. Given I like having a tent with me when I do go camping (been a while since the last trip), I didn't have a problem sleeping on a cot, outside, in Africa a few years back. Ultimately, each person has his/her preference but personally, when I do go camping, I like to be comfortable. I know there are some people who call tents, goretex jackets, etc. idiotic and regard them as useless, but then those were the guys who chose to forego using such items in the military, purely to appear harder than the rest. Kind of silly if you ask me. If you have a rain jacket, tent, etc. and have an opportunity to use it, why make it less tolerable and be wet, cold, etc.?

Yeah I've had the weather turn in a hurry. It was a hurricane that we had no way of knowing it was coming our way. It wrecked my buds tent while we were about 50 miles away.

We could make this pissing contest go forever... When the opportunity presents itself sleep outside beside a fire is all I'm saying. You enjoy setting up your tent, I enjoy laughing at you set it up. You enjoy me wiping the dew off my face at 6 in the morning.

Tents serve a purpose. I personally have yet to find that purpose on any of my trips is all I'm saying. Save all the life or death weather bullshit for someone else. If shits that bad I'll get in my damn truck and set my cot up in there.

Sleeping in the D1 can be comfortable, but is not always the most convenient solution. It's great if you're on rocky/soggy/otherwise lousy terrain for a tent. Being 6'4" doesn't make it easier to sleep in the truck, but I found that if I move the passenger seat all the way forward, tilt the back forward, remove the rear passenger seat (a few 10mm bolts), and then fill the rear passenger footwell with other gear to create a platform that is flush with the loadspace, then I can sleep diagonally in the back of the truck.

Going to all that trouble is more work than pitching a tent, and you have to put the unbolted rear seat somewhere, but once it's all done it's a comfy space to sleep in. I've only done it a couple times. It's nice to have the option if you need it.

This is one area where the LR3/LR4 shines. All the rear seats fold flush into the floor giving you a giant flat space in the back of the truck. It's cavernous back there compared to a D1 and could comfortably sleep 2 people with all your gear stowed in the front seats.

I have a cargo area shelf in my D1 that is level with the folded back of the rear seat (on purpose); that gives you about 5.5' of room. Then the cubby box is at the same level as well, extending the useful room to 6.5-7'.

On the way home from Utah, I pulled off to a desert exit, drove a couple of hundred feet from the freeway, parked the truck behind the bushes, and went to sleep without having to get out of the truck (light rain outside). Woke up six hours later, drove off without getting out of the truck.
I have not tried peeing in the truck and hope I never will, though...

This isn't a pissing contest... I love sleeping outside.

Well Done my friend. That's what the hell I'm talking about.

I honestly can't remember the last time I was inside a tent. I don't own one. I've worn out two coleman cots and now on a fold up cot that stows pretty well.

Funniest shit ever. Me and a friend have a six hour drive to a motocross race at Mt. Morris PA. Ended up blowing the head gaskets on his truck pulling the trailer up Lovers Leap hill on RT 58. Limped that piece of shit back home and grabbed a open trailer and my piece of shit Dakota and loaded bikes on that. We arrived at 3 in the morning after 18 hours of driving and set the cots up and went to sleep. Somehow we fucked up and set up 10 ft in front of the registration trailer that started at 6 am. We literally had a line in between our cots. I wake up and realize whats going on. Rolled over and laughed my ass off and went back to sleep.
