I just picked up a winch bumper that needs refinishing. I definitely want to use por-15, but not sure what top coat to use. Leaning towards Chassis Cote from the same company. Couldn't find any info on it searching, anyone use it before?

http://www.por15.com/s.nl/it.A/id.1410/.f

Black Cote is full-gloss versus the Chassis Cote being semi-gloss, how is the finish? Should I just use Rustoleum?

any tips for the prep? I'm thinking wire brush in an electric drill, laqeur thinner to clean it, and then brush the Por-15, finish with top coat.

POR sucks!!!!!

sorry but its the truth...and there are lots of people that restored cars all the way down to bare metal to find the same thing...the shit peels!!!

PPG makes a much better base coat for bare metal.

see the problem is POR stands for paint over rust. you aint going to be painting over rust. so if you are building a oil rig or a water tower or a big bridge and you can let it rust and create a perfect ETCHED surface...have at it you will love POR. but on fresh bare metal it WILL peel.

I know this because I have used it...first hand knowledge:D

OR etch the metal properly and THEN use POR15. The stuff rocks! It won't peel if you prep the surface properly and in doing so will last a helluva lot longer than some rattlecan crap. In the long run it will actually save you money - do it right the first time!

From the same company:

http://www.por15.com/s.nl/it.A/id.1266/.f

"Our simple process gently etches metal, creating an ideal anchor pattern for coatings such as POR-15®, while simultaneously leaving a zinc phosphate coating to insure chemical bonding of paint and steel."

Use POR15 properly and you won't be disappointed.

I have used Por15, Chassis Saver, and Durabak on various projects. All directions were followed to the T with prep and application and IMO Durabak is by far the best of the 3.

It sticks to anything and seems to last forever. I will never use anything else again. Just my $.02.

Muskyman's right! POR 15 MUST be painted over rust to work! The stuff rocks the mic if you prep the metal/rust properly. Wouldn't use it for a non-rusted bumper though, kinda a waste of some expensive stuff(POR 15). That and I think the only black is gloss and a gloss black bumper might look weird.

por15 isn't stable to UV. it need to be topcoated.
when i started on the series i tried sandblasting a part then painting it, then back to the sandblaster to see how it would work. i was impressed it didn't want to come off the sand would wear it down but would not strip it easily. i used por15 primer and imron for a topcoat.

Best job is to galvanise the bare metal, then powder coat, though me I would leave it just the way it is.. Primer, and paint ! Its an offroading bumper :) If its rusts a bit Tremclad the sucker,, cheap

I've had very good luck with the POR products and they have a pretty good reputation in the restoration community.

You should get rid of as much of the rust as possible (sanding, media blasting, etc)... Then I get the area prepped and cleaned. There's a "rest encapsulator/primer" that I usually use first, then go to the POR-15 black of your choice, but read directions on the website of which steps you are supposed to use when.

You are just painting a bumper, so I wouldn't think you need to go overboard with prep. ;)

As for the color... You are right on the money. I think you'll be very pleased with the Chassis Cote black!!!

My only suggestion (as slight as it might be) is to really clean off the area around the paint can lid PERFECTLY and rid it of any excess paint that might have fallen down in the ridge or anything. If there's paint in there and you bang on the lid of the can you won't ever be able to get it open again. It will bond the can shut forever.

I've had to throw out a small can because of this. :(
