Best way to mount spare tire

My truck came with a flimsy strap holding the 33" spare tire to the partition behind the front seats which didn't hold it very stable. It also interfered with the racing harnesses installed. I know about the interior spare wheel mounting screw but don't particularly like this location.

I don't have a bonnet dish holder and I thought about the Mantec rear carrier but want the tire inside and don't like the price.

Right now it's lying flat on the floor loose and bouncing around. Are there any other good alternatives to mount it? Has anyone tried drilling a hole and bolting it through the floor or rigging some sort of strap to hold it there?

Thanks,

Is there room in an 88 for the recessed "pocket" on the side where the rear seats would go?

Off to find a pic...

In an 88", that dished out side would be right over the wheel... in a 109", it's far enough forward to not interfere. Not to say that, if you added one to an 88", that it would interfere, but, it might....

The three spots for the spare in a Series are on the bonnet (whether dished or not), on the back door (helps to have a 3rd hinge, but the Mantec or some other swing away carrier would reduce stress on the back door), or on the bulkhead between the tub's cargo area and the front seats.... all of which you've mentioned. Put one at each of these locations, then strap a fourth to the roofrack, and you can change out ALL your tires... :p

On my SIII, the original bonnet was a flat one, but it had the pie plate holder on there. The dished bonnets help with being able to see over the tire; however, the dished area collects water which will bleed down through the rivet holes and rust out the bonnet's frame. I did switch to a dished bonnet on mine (because I wanted the rolled lip at the front instead of the flat front), but pulled the frame out and POR'd it.

If you do find a 109" to look at, you'll see the spot where the tray drops into the wheelwell area; then there is a bracket that sticks up from the side. You might be able to fabricate a similar bracket that is a bit taller that would extend up enough to mount the wheel there, even without having the dished tray underneath it, or maybe a shallower tray.

Of course, your gas tank is under the seatbox, so, you could mount the spare under the tub and be just like every other pickup out there......:ack:

BTW... Nice lookin' Series.....

If you are going to do a roll cage in there you could mount it upright against the cage like mine. I am thinking of using one of those roll cage clamps you have on your bullbar to mount the spare upright to the roll bar rear brace over the wheel well.

I have tried them all. I personally like the look of the tire on the bonnet, but not a great place when wheeling. So, I scrounged up some hardware and now have it mounted behind the bulkhead along with my hilift rack. For securing the tire (since the hilift takes the original tire bracket to mount), I have a ratchet strap which hooks the tire on opposite sides of the rim, and then around my roll bar. Very secure. I can see out the back (I have a truck cab), and have an excellent view for bushwhacking.

I agree that the best way is on the roll bar. Unfortunately Safety Devices doesn't make anything right. I'm going to find someone who can build me one locally although I have no idea what I should be paying for something like that.

I tried to put the spare on the rear door mount yesterday...but stupid me...the out spaced rim and tire doesn't fit on it. It really opens up a lot of room with it outside.

I also found that DAP sells a Bearmach swing away rear tire carrier. Does anyone know how this compares to the Mantec one? DAP sells a different model for rear doors and rear tailgates. Can the Bearmach or Mantec model be modified to fit both or mabye it's just a different adapter plate (planning ahead when I eventually take off the roof in the summertime).

Any drawbacks to the rear swing away carrier?

Thanks,
Jamil

I have what _should_ be the bearmach one. I bought it from Paddock's when in the UK. I wanted the Mantec one, but bought the Paddocks one for 75 quid which was much more affordable.

The only problem with the bearmach one is that it's got two mounting points. There's nothing that holds the wheel against the door, so for REALLY heavy wheels, it sags a little. Granted, my 35" Simexes are fine, but my 34" XZL's make it sag. The mantec one has three mounting points.

Scott,
Thanks for the info. I only have 33" tires which should be fine with it. What do you mean it has only 2 mounting points? If there is nothing that holds it to the door what keeps it from swinging away? Do you need to swing it separately from the door?

Thanks,
Jamil

Here's a photo it from the current Bearmach catalog. Maybe there's a new version. The one in the photo looks almost identical to the Mantec one.

Ah. I see... no that one does have the three mounting points. I'd get that if I were looking for something for my 109 which has a rear door. How much is DAP asking for it?

The one I have must be from another british aftermarket supplier. (Britpart, maybe?) Here's the picture from Paddocks site:

At those prices it's worth seeing what the current exchange rate and shipping will get you from Paddocks, John Craddock, Simmonites, or any of those folk.

Mine for 75 pounds would be $135 - shipping and import would need to be another $135 to make it as expensive as BP (plus whatever they charge for shipping) - Not that you want the one I've got, but it's just an example of what kind of markup you're dealing with.

I bought one of the WVA Holdings tire carriers from Atlantic British for $369 (talk to Eric) - its better built than the Mantec and $130 cheaper. I haven't had the chance to install it on my D-90 yet but will in the next week or so.

Jack--I have no idea what the WVA carrier is and I couldn't find it on the AB site.

I did a bit more research and it looks like the photo I posted above is the new version of the Bearmach carrier. The shape and mounting brackets are all identical to the Mantec one. Is Bearmach getting their parts from Mantec or did they just copy the design? Here's a pic of the old one:

Scorpion Racing sells the WVA Holdings as does Safari Equip
http://www.safari-equip.co.uk/sel01.htm

I like the mounting points of the WVA unit better (stronger) and you can get the optional Hi-lift mount if you want it.

here's a pic:

The one from DAP is a Piv-Lock, as supplied to the M.O.D.
The one for the drop down tailgate does not have the third attachment point, the one for the rear door does (for obvious reasons).

You can mount it on the side like a 109 regular, it just sits up high and blocks vision (put it on the drivers side), but it fits.

Try to find a parting out range rover classic and get its mount.
