I will throw in my .02

I have had both D1 and D2 of all years and probably 100 of them (I am sitting on 8 right now) the D2 is more refined all around. its little stuff but a lot of it when you add it all up. smoother ride, more electronics, nicer seats... just much more refined car. Dont get caught up on gettign a 2003-2004, 99-2002 are great especially of you can get one for a good price. the 2003 and 2004 are even more refined and even better, it was little things that did this and they do have the 4.6 with 40 more HP. D2 is a much quieter drivetrain adding cardboard in the drivelines and the rubber donut on the rear driveshaft... all just refinements.

Now personally im a simplicity guy. I would pick the 1996 D1 any day of the week over and over and over. The D1 is a very mechanical car, simple in many respects. The best and simplest was the 1996 D1. They started adding emisions stuff in 97 and changed the efi relay setup. The fuel pump added evaps into it, none of this was world changing but added a little complexity to the fuel system. Another personal preference is the R380, I have 2 D1s and both are r380 swapped manual transmissions. I like that the D1 is a non electronic transmission for this reason. Easy swap. The d2 is 4hp22e and 4hp24e transmission with electronic controls and tcm. Again i like simple and like the Manual valve body automatic transmission better, although 2003-2004 got the stronger 4hp24. Another thing i like on the D1 is the rear factory 4 link suspension and the front radius rod mounting. There are big advantages to the D1 suspension when building that you cant do or are limitations with the D2. Its all little things but it all adds up and when building a disco you have to think about these things.

So thats my .02 for me the D1 wins every time but for many the D2 is a better pick. All of them are great cars and there is no other car built like a Disco.

Thanks S Ed, you’re a brave soul, over 100 and eight currently? Are you a dealer or one that just wants to keep the legend alive? You are a wealth of information! You wouldn’t happen to be in Southern California would you? 😃

Awesome, if you ever make it up here give me a shout…Who would you recommend for LR service in the Inland Empire?
I am seriously looking for a pre D3 Disco let me know if you see one (in so cal preferably) that you think is in great shape. I’m willing to go to $20k
Happy New Year!🎆

Check out the Southern California Rover Club. Good resource for locals. I have a Great running disco for sale.

Love to hear this! I just picked up a 96 w/118k miles, no sunroof, and a handful of aftermarket goodies(locking diffs, bumper, winch, etc.)

Can you point me to any posts or guides for doing a manual swap? I'm doing the head gasket right now and am overjoyed realizing working on these things is easy. Ideally, I'd love to throw a 300tdi w/manual in it one day.

If the tail lights are up high, walk on by. Jk I think you’d enjoy either of them. I think your number one goal should be to find one with minimal rust. It seems like it was common to see the 99 D1 SD with no sunroofs. If I was starting over, that’s what I’d do and then swap in heated seats.
And hopefully a good maintenance history along with minimal rust. I’m partial to ‘96 SD auto box. Kept it totally stock. They all have quirks.

The 97 GEMs has been good to me. 200k over the last 20 years, engine is all original. Only things I’ve had to replace is alt, rad, water pump, viscus fan. Still runs consistently at 190 degrees.

It seems to me the 14CUX (pre-gems) D1 is the "most reliable" of the NAS D1's (which rules out 200/300/HS2.8 diesels). It is much less sophisticated than the GEMS D1, is likely smog-exempt (except in places like Kalifornika) and while more prone to idle stability issues, still has a distributor and is less electronified than the 1996-98 D1..and much less than newer ones. Once you sort any pesky problems (like converting the TPS to the cheap and generic one) then engine-wise, the 3.9 is solid (not powerful... but reliable).

So it depends upon your preference: Do you want to have a little more old fashioned engine or one with a crank trigger, no distributor, and an OBDII port?

That said, the comment up there about the non-sunroof option is 100% CORRECT!! This alone can make the difference between a rustbucket and a solid ride. I would add manual seats to the preference list.

Also, I would convert the power steering to electric-over-hydraulic (see the post on this) to help solve power steering leakage problems.
I would also prefer the R380 manual tranny over the hp22 slushshifter.. if you're so inclined.

Finding a non-sunroof, manual seat, manual shifted 14cux OR GEMS is not an easy task.. good hunting.

Agreed, manuals are more reliable, and fun to drive. After watching a buddy in his 23’ Bronco just push a button to crawl I’ve a garden that I had to consistently clutch/brake/shift/stall (oops, missed that one) I thought to myself, now where is the fun in that, there’s no challenge!
But after saying that….I am looking for more of an over lander, more comfortable drive in the back country. Oh, but for sure, I’ll keep my second wife 😉 my locked and loaded, stick 92’ YJ for the fun stuff.
Thanks for the input guys!
