BFG MT's, BFG AT's, or Goodyear MTR's?

I know that you can get loads of miles out of BFG AT's, but what about BFG MT's, and Goodyear MTR's? How many miles can you get out of a set? Which would you recommend? How much noise on the road? How do they handle on the road? I only take my DII offroad about 2 or 3 times a year, so would MT's be worth it?

I've never owned a set of M/T tires, so I can't speak too much about them, except to say that I think its generally agreed that they are the single best general purpose off-road tire you can buy.

If you are only going off-road a couple times a year though, I have never been let down by my BFG a/t's off the pavement, and on the pavement they are even quieter than the michelin XPC's that came from the factory. You are also going to get a lot better gas mileage and tire life with the a/t's than with the m/t's.

If you only go off-road a couple o' times a year, you're better off w/ ATs. The BFGs will handle your off-roading & perform much better on-road, especially on slick surfaces.

Had all three and I recommend....

Well, even if you do a "little" off-roading, you'll be thankful you bought a mud-terrain tire.
I've had all three types on my '96 D1 and I like the Goodyear MTR's the best.

I love BFG's, but the MTR's seem to have more grip in slippery situations on and off road.
I got about 60K on and off road with my BFG's.

I'm running my first set of MTR's right now and so far, I'm very happy.

I have had both BFG M/T and MTR's. By far the better of the two are the MTR's. The M/Ts were very good offroad but wore down way too fast. I now have MTR's with about 32K miles and still a lot of good tread left and they are great offroad. Just my 2 cents

I've used BFG /AT's on the majority of my trucks for many years. In my opinion,
they are the best all around tires. You get loads of miles out of them.( 50 -60k) They do well off roading, off course not as well as the MT's. They're not as noisy as the MT's and offer a smoother ride. The MT's give you a rougher ride, are noisier (which I happen to love) and don't wear as well. They are better in mud, snow and for must off roading. Not the best rock crawlers though.

My 2 cents

I'm having A/Ts put on my Disco on Friday so when that happens I'll give ya yet another opinion on them but I based my decision on what's said here and other forums.

If you have the money and the space, then get the BFG M/Ts on a separate set of wheels (steel preferably) and put them on when you go off-road. Keep A/Ts or street bias tires on your alloys for everyday driving. I run my M/Ts most of the year while I'm at school and have the opportunity to go off-roading on a weekly basis, but put the A/Ts on during the summer when I'm just driving errands around town.

Like someone once said on D-Web... "If you have to ask whether or not you need a MT, you probably don't".

Besides, with AT's you can always feel better about spending money on a winch :)

Goodyear MT/R's for me

I was just looking at a set of new tires and had the same dilema(sp?). BFG Mud Terrains are my favorite and would love to have those, but honestly I only get off road a couple of times per month due to location/work schedule. So I decided an All-Terrain tire would be more beneficial overall. And instead of buying new BFG AT's, I found a good deal on a Rubicon owner that was upgrading. He only had a couple thousand miles on his stock Goodyear MT/R's 245/75R16, before he decided to go up to 33's and I got a good deal on them.

This size is perfect because it fits the stock suspension great untill I can afford the lift springs. So far on the road they aren't bad at all, slightly louder road noise but not bad at all. They look great, and give a little extra ground clearance without taking away too much of the power from the engine. Played in the woods a little with them, and can tell you they definately get more grip than the stock Michelins. I'll just have to wait and see how long they last, that will be what helps me determines how much I like these.
